Default Will Smith wants to be first "Black Bond"

Smith: 'I'm The Best Black Bond'

6 May 2009 6:35 PM, PDT

Will Smith has added his name to the list of stars who want to be the first black James Bond, insisting he'll be the best choice for producers.

Rap mogul Diddy and Jamie Foxx have both put their names forward as a possible replacement for current 007 Daniel Craig, and recently Obsessed star Idris Elba suggested he'd be a better choice - because he's British.

Diddy went so far as to shoot a 007-themed TV ad for his fragrance line in an effort to show producers what he'd look like as a black Bond.

But Smith insists he's the best choice: "Puff probably lives the most like James Bond and Jamie Foxx got the swagger for James Bond. He can sing too, so he can add a new element to Bond, wooing the ladies.

"But I think I can guarantee the box office!"

Is Daniel Craig out already? I think he's been fantastic. I could see 5 more with him before we get a new bond. I mean how many did we get with Pierce, who was great in Goldeneye?

Big willie for Bond, please! That would definitely get me to see Bond again, something I haven't done since Die Another Day.

Hmmm, this ran on the 6th:

I want to be first black James Bond, says The Wire star Idris Elba

Quote:
ONE of the stars of US crime drama The Wire says he wants to become the first black James Bond.

British actor Idris Elba, who plays drug dealer Russell "Stringer" Bell in the show, said he was inspired by Sean Connery.

Londoner Elba, 36, added: "I've got what it takes to do it. I can run around, flirt with ladies and drink. Plus, I am English."

Current 007 Daniel Craig has already given his backing to a black Bond..

Yes. I am not racist, but Bond is not black! That is silly. Let's make another Friday movie with Jim Carrey and Steve Carell, then we can have a black Bond.

I'll make the call right now. After the next Bond, Craig will announce "I've done all I can with the character" and move on. EON will cast against type to "keep the franchise fresh and exciting."

What does whether Bond is Black have to do with anything? There's been many movies that have cast actors of different races or ethnicities than the original sourced material.

I believe the role of Jackie Brown (originally appearing in Elmore Leonard's Rum Punch) was white, and yet Pam Grier got the role.

I remember Lela Rochon got the role in (I think) The Rainmaker and the character in John Grisham's novel was originally white.

And I'm sure there's several instances of a white character playing a role that was originally black.

I mean, I don't think it matters. Yeah, Bond is a bit more of a storied character, but again...not sure it matters.

Personally I wish they'd just finally give the role to Clive Owen, who I think would make a brilliant Bond. Just see the BMW short films "The Hire" to see what I mean.

Yea thats like a black Superman or Batman, Bond is already a set character, you can't just make him black. It wouldn't make any sense, I don't think the Bond franchise would do that, it would be stupid.

Then it would be Sex and the City with guns and gadgets.

Just cannot see Bond being black or female for that matter. Not racist or sexist but with a character like Bond you have to keep some things in order. There was uproar in the British press about DC having blond hair, imagine the furor over Will Smith or any of the other actors listed. Now a new series of films featuring a character like bond would be nice. (OH! that was already done with Bourne. And he was white too. Come on Hollywood, do you not think a black man can run, jump, fire a gun, drive nice cars and woo the ladies at the same time )

You must have edited your post, didn't catch this part. But I do agree with it. I thought Clive Owen was great in all of the BMW shorts. He is good in every film he acts in, and could pull of this type of role.

Sounds like a plot for the NBA or NFL film.
