Default Sony BDP-S300 (features info)

Here is a link that verifies some of the features the new Sony BDP-S300 will have.It is scheduled for this summer and will have: 1080P/24, expanded color on AVC-HD Blu-ray discs, and Dolby Digital Plus sound track decoding in the player. This second generation BDP-S300 BLU-RAY is $400 cheaper then first generation and is much better quality according to the specs.

http://www.twice.com/article/CA6420089.html

QUOTE:
The new player will output full 1,080p resolution over its HDMI v1.3 output at 24 fps. It will also up convert images to 1,080p format. HD component video outputs are also added for older HDTV displays.
Sony said the player will support forthcoming AVC-HD discs encoded with xvYCC technology that expands the available color gamut 1.8 times. Also included is the BRAVIA Theater Sync system that uses HDMI connectivity to integrate the operation of a series of connected BRAVIA components through a single remote.
Other features include multichannel linear PCM digital audio output via HDMI and can decode Dolby Digital Plus sound tracks.
Support is also included for BD-ROM, BD-Java, AVC-HD, DVD video, CD audio, MP3 audio files and JPEG photo files stored on DVD recordable media, including the DVD+R/+RW and DVD-R/-RW formats.”

Ahh so they had a secret weapon.

Does the other encoder have that trick (probably)

let's see.

24p
60% more bit-rate
67% more storage
D-BOX motion code
xvYCC 80% wider color gamut

I think I'll stick with DVDs, thank you.
4:3 NTSC iiis good enough

What does you guys think about the BDP-S300 vs the Samsung BD-P1200. Both seem to be very good 2nd gen players, but just from the specs it appears the Sony would seem to be the better player and at $200 less. What is everyone else's thoughts?

According to the specs the Sony is better at $200 cheaper. The Samsung BD-P1200 is scheduled to ship this month. The Sony might not ship until August. If you can wait go with the Sony.

The Samsung will have the HQV chip for upconverting SD DVDs. I have the Denon 2930 for that reason (aside from DVD-Audio and SACD capabilities) and the result doesn't need to hide. It's not as good as HD (like some people like to think after a couple of drinks ) but it was worth the price imo.

If you have a receiver with HDMI and maybe want to play a game every once in a while then the PS3 is great. But without HDMI you can only get lossy 5.1 or 2.0 PCM over optical.
Since the BDP-S300 will have analog outs you won't have that problem, plus some people don't like the idea of a game console populating their HT rack. Personally I think the PS3 looks great and is a great BD player.

I have an old receiver with no plans to upgrade for now. It is the Denon AVR-3300. I will be using Optical Out. The 5.1 is fine with me.

I am not much of a gamer, but my kids are. They have the Wii to keep them busy for now, but I'm sure the PS3 will pique interest. For the most part however it would be used for BD playback. I like the idea of getting Firmware updates via wirlesss internet.

Would I regret not buying one over the other?

The PS3 is good for the average person. The new Sony BLU-RAY player is better if you have a expensive 1080P display that supports 1080P/24 and higher color gamut. PS3 does not support 1080P/24 but that is not a issue for most people that have older 1080P displays. PS3 also does videogames and can connect to the web.

Will the BDP-S300 have analog audio outputs, particularly 2-channel stereo analog audio outputs?

When do you think we'll see pics of the BDP-S300, both front and back?

The Sony BDP-S300 is scheduled to ship toward the end of June 2007. Of course like many consumer electronics products dates can change as unexpected production delays occur. In reality if things get delayed we could be looking at a late summer launch like September.

Unless the DVD forum has changed the rules, CSS doesn't allow for upconversion of DVDs over analog outputs.

Will the BDP-S300 have the very same digital AND analog outputs as the BDP-S1? The digital outputs are great for DTS and Dolby Digital Surround, but I would like it if the S300 had a pair of stereo analog outputs for playing back SD DVDs of TV shows that are mixed in 2.0 stereo.
