Since you asked for the "Best" 42" flat panel on the market without any other stipulation, then it would be the following Panasonic:

I agree with the second post cant get better then that Panasonic right now. Make sure you set the picture setting to THX to get the best out of the tv. The TV is rated #2 right according to cnet.com http://reviews.cnet.com/best-hdtvs/?...ent;contentNav

It sucks Best Buy doesn't carry the smaller versions of that Panasonic TV. I'm looking to get a new one, but 50" is too big for the space I have. What does everyone think about this TV...

Do you have a membership at Sam's Club or Costco? Those stores typically have 42" models priced well below $1000, and they are various brands.

Also, be sure to consider the dimensions of the actual set in addition to screen size. Some of these have big ol' speakers underneath, on the sides, or even just huge bezels/edges that could be a problem. Conversely, maybe you can find a good 47" that would somehow fit your space.

The phrase "Best TV", by definition, does not include:

1) Anything by Vizio

or

2) Anything purchased from Wal-Mart

Stay away from anything Target offers for under $1000. They have a 1080p 50" Panasonic and a 720p 42" Panny that I would consider, but other than that, I would just pick up a 1080p 42" panny from an online competitor.

I picked up my 42 inch panny from Best Buy for about $1099 with 3 years no interest.

I know Vizio are not top notch, but picture quality and price, you cant beat them, as long as you get one that doesnt crap out on you. Walmart has a 1080P 120HZ 42" LCD Vizio for $897, Im sorry, but for what you get at that price nobody touches it. Once again Im not saying its top notch, but bang for the buck, nobody touches it.

You must work at Video only, they even have a book full of reasons to not buy Vizio.... I have bought my last 2 TV's from them, but I wouldnt buy a bedroom tv from them, Walmart is the way to go for a decent secondary TV. But you also gotta realize that most people cant even see the difference in pic quality from vizio to samsung, so why would they pay the difference. I think the forum members here are the main reasons places like video only exist and can stay in business.

Nobody touches it? You seriously must be joking, right? Why in the world would anyone spend $900 on a POS Vizio LCD when they can get a Pany G10 for $115 more? For that matter, you can get the 720p X1 for $700, and I guarantee you the picture will blow-away any Vizio. The whole "bang for you buck" argument hasn't held water for Vizio for quite some time. If more people would actually do the research, they would see this. You are right about one thing, though, Vizios definitely are not "top notch".
