As someone who cares about the environment, it can be hard to think about what to do when you double dip to get a Blu-Ray. Does anyone know how get rid of a DVD and case other than throwing it out to avoid impacting the environment? Thanks in advance.

Instead of junking them why not just trade them in for store credit or something

Me, I've racked up about $100 in tax-deductible charity this year donating them to whichever of our local libraries still doesn't have its DVD section beefed up yet.
(Since they don't put their own declaration value, I can claim $5 a title as plausible.) If you absolutely have to throw them in the trash (used non-Mac digital copies, for ex.), some local green-stores like Whole Foods now have bins for blank CD/DVD's. |

What I have been doing lately is buying a bunch of two disc BD cases. If I feel that I might have a use for the DVD in the future. I take the DVD and package it with the BD. Recycle the DVD case and keep the single disc BD case for future purchases that might need replacing (I am looking at you eco-cases). If there is a 2nd disc of Extras (like Predator or From Hell) that are not on the BD, I package the Extras disc with the BD. I then give the DVDs that I don't need anymore to my parents or siblings.

But yeah, you can always repurpose things into other uses. For example, I had a can of pop the other day that had a lot of condensation, so I pulled out an old junk DVD I had in a drawer and used it as a coaster. There are a lot of things that these discs can be repurposed into, you can probably google "repurpose CD" and get a bunch of craft projects. Definitely, though, if it's a movie and you know a family member or friend doesn't have that movie and would like to own it, give it to them. Duh. |

Toss them in the microwave for 5-10 seconds and turn them into art.

monkeyjb1988,
I have kept most of my DVDs which I've double-dipped on, but friends have gotten a few of them. When I upgraded to DVD from VHS, I had no problem giving the tapes away as well. ![]() I like the library idea. I'm sure they'll take any titles they don't already have, and your friends and family will surely scarf up the rest. Problem solved. ![]() |
