Hmmm, I have extremely ambivalent feelings about this. The remake/sequel/whatever is no doubt awful (although it does star both Arianne Martin and Andrew Sensenig!), but the original is one of my favorites, from an all-time unsung director. If the latter is actually 1080p and not just a SD extra, I may have to pick this up, even if I will never subject myself to Part 2.

This is directed by his son. I have searched on the internet for reviews of it and found two of them and they are both positive so it may be worth a blind buy, especially if the original included is also in HD.

I've seen the original once, a couple of years ago. I found it tedious and annoying.

It will be a 1080P HD upconvert, and we will try and make it look as beautiful as possible. We are still awaiting the master file and will know more when we get it.

The original is a (very) minor classic, but the fact it's public domain gives me no hope whatsoever for the quality of it as an extra. Currently I only own it as part of one of those 4-movie public domain horror DVD sets (along with a few other MIA flicks like Devil's Nightmare), and the quality is bad, but I don't think there's a good version that exists.

I have it on VHS, so anything would assumedly be an improvement (as long as there wasn't any DNR), but I'm still wary.

I'm genuinely intrigued by the sequel, so I fully plan on picking this up regardless of the original's presentation. Can't look worse than the DVD dump-bin tape transfer I've been dealing with for about a decade.

As for the sequel itself, I think it look somewhat promising. I'm a bit hesitant to think it'll be some masterpiece of horror (or anything even close), but I think the trailer REALLY sold me on it. I'm gonna give it an entirely fresh-eyed viewing and try my best not to compare it to the original; hopefully it'll end up beating my expectations. Anything's possible.

Anyone know if the label releasing this uses BD-R's or actual blu-ray discs?
They seem to be fairly small (as well as direct) and that's a big worry-factor for me these days.

Just when I think that I already own every horror movie on the planet that was released between 1970 and 1985, something new comes up for me to spend money on.

I'm intrigued to hear more about the original film and its presentation on this package.


(I probably only own about two percent of the horror movies that were released during the above time period, but y'all know what I mean...)

I'm sure you will like all four SF Brownrigg horror films from the 70's.
Grindhouse Releasing are doing one of them on blu ray Scum Of The Earth hopefully sometime this year.

Best version I have seen for the original is VCI's anamorphic DVD
( and when they have the best version , dial your expectations down a notch).

I wonder where they are getting their 'master file" from as there is no licencor to get it from?

If they're able to improve upon the quality of Don't Look in the Basement in any capacity, I'll pick it up in a heartbeat. Like babybreese said, the VCI anamorphic DVD is heads and shoulders above everything else that's out there. It's the best I've seen the movie look, which is sad.

SF Brownrigg is among my favorite of the regional filmmakers of the time period and his stuff has been criminally mistreated and mostly left to wither on awful public domain sets.

$18.30 total including shipping.. I'm very tempted to bite on this... the new film doesn't look too bad, certainly no worse than the original in my mind... decisions decisions.

No real interest in the sequel, but will get this if the original is presented in halfway decent quality. I'm a big Brownrigg fan, and he's from my neck of the woods, which gives his work added novelty value. Keep My Grave Open is definitely my favorite of his films, so fingers crossed it can get a nice release some day.

The trailer for the "sequel" looks really dire in my eyes, simply another cheap generic SOV flick that would be lucky if 1000 people ever even watched it. Not that the original film had a big budget, but it was a proper film and had its low-budget charms. I love SF Brownrigg's original films, interesting regional 35mm filmmaking at a time when it was very difficult to do so.

His son doing a very cheap Digital Video "sequel" to cash in is just low class. Nothing in that trailer shows any sort of competence over the usual DTV garbage shown on every movie or Sy-Fy-type tv channel these days.

Just give us the original film remastered. Making an unwanted sequel and then throwing in the original film as a special feature 1080p upconvert as a selling point is insulting. No one wants this anemic looking DTV 'sequel' if the original isn't out there in a quality release first.

Thankfully, Grindhouse has Scum of the Earth, so that should get a proper release. Keep My Grave Open, please, someone pick that one up and do it justice. I guess VCI still has "Don't Open the Door", Brownrigg's lesser film, but still worthwhile.

You can call it a "sequel" with air-quotes all you want... but the fact remains that this IS a sequel. Calling it SOV is in more poor taste than anything you accused the film of being. You haven't seen the movie yet, so bashing it already is a little ridiculous. It doesn't look all that bad, and, furthermore, could be the best movie ever made for all anybody knows. We won't be certain until we watch the damn thing...

And there's nothing "low class" about it's existence, as I'm sure Brownrigg's son probably had discussed with his own father about where the story would go, and maybe even gotten his blessing to make the sequel one day. Who are you to judge? His father's films probably played a big part in his life, why is he soooo wrong for trying to honor or expand upon them in his own way?

We can agree about wanting a remastered version of the original, but come on. Don't shit on this movie you haven't even seen, while simultaneously shitting on the original director's son. That's true classlessness. Without this release, it's likely we wouldn't even get an upconverted version of the original. So really, you should be thanking the film for even being a thing. Maybe it'll even draw some much-needed attention to the original, making it possible for us to get a restored version of the first film one day soon. Who knows?

Looks like they raised the price by $2. Not sure if they plan to raise it more or not. So if you're going to order might be worth while instead of waiting. Just a heads up.
