Default Based on a True Story

Who doesn't like to see those words at the start of a movie? Those five words tend to grab you and take you a little deeper into the movie then you might have gone, well for me anyways.
I know that "Based on a True Story" could mean a few things are true or alot of the movie is based on fact.
What are your picks for Best Movie that was based on a true story?

My pick that comes to mind is "A Beautiful Mind"

Saving Private Ryan
Braveheart (even though the history is fudged severely, thankfully Mel Gibson's commentary points out the historical facts.)
Black Hawk Down
World Trade Center

One of the most shocking true stories I never heard about:

The Bank Job

These two movies are pretty much autobiiographical:

Almost Famous
Chasing Amy

By far though, one film based on true events that I can not shake from my memory is:

An American Crime

- Ellen Page plays Sylvia Likens, one half of a pair of sisters entrusted to Gertrude Baniszewski (Catherine Keener) while her parents work the carnival circuit. What Gertrude did to Sylvia was beyond abuse and torture. But what makes the story more sickening is the fact that Gertrude's children and eventually Sylvia's classmates join in on the nightmarish abuse.

The actual events occured in 1965 and the movie is primarily made from the original court transcripts.

An American Crime

That was so messed up what they did to that girl. I didn't know it was based on a true story until after I had watched it and I read up on it. So sad. Good movie though

I almost started a thread saying how much I HATE (or really despise) seeing those words at the beginning of a story. They have run out of really good true stories and we are stuck with the left over crap like Valkrie and Defiance. Just because something happened doesnt mean it has to have a movie made about it. To me, all those people that ***** about them making movies about every toy or TV show in history should aim theyre anger out those people who make movies "based on a true story".

You do know that FARGO wasn't actually based on anything NEAR a true story, right? The Cohen Bros. just decided to throw those words up at the beginning for the sake of......

...mocking the process of "adapting a true story" into a film.

That's one MORE reason to love the Cohen Bros.

I disagree about Defiance. That was a great story that deserved to be told, and the movie was very good as well.

as Texas Chain Saw is very loosely based on Ed Geins... Strangers is so far from what reallly happened. Honestly, idk why they didnt stick to the real story more as it would have been a much better movie, entertainment wise.
