Default Sony Love The XMB Just The Way It Is

Sony Love The XMB Just The Way It Is
By Luke Plunkett, 6:30 AM on Wed Jul 8 2009, 3,801 views

Quote:
While Microsoft have seen fit to completely overhaul their console's front end, Sony say that they'll be nothing of the sort with the PS3. At least, not anytime soon.

Chatting with PCWorld, Sony's Eric Lempel has said:

What we find is that people really like our current interface. We did redesign the PlayStation Store last April to make some improvements, make it faster, make it better, and we're always listening to consumers. But right now the XMB [XrossMediaBar] is an Emmy Award-winning interface and people like it. They're very comfortable with it. So we're not looking to do anything radical. We'll still do some research behind the scenes and see what can we do to make things better, or how can we make it so consumers find content faster, but right now we're pretty happy with it. No plans right now to do anything like what the competitor has done.

Well, really, why would Sony be trying anything radical? Microsoft had to change the 360's original user interface because it was confusing, something that wasn't entirely rectified with the NXE. But the XMB? It was easy as pie to use, from day 1, and remains that way to this day.

I like the XMB. Tweak it, but don't overhaul it. MS overhauling the 360's interface was a mistake. I personally liked the blade interface better- I sometimes find myself lost in the mess that is the NXE. I do like how it's easy to see new stuff with the new interface.

...crap. I just turned this into a comparison thread.

To avoid that, I have to say that the XMB being on multiple devices makes it easy to pick up any Sony device and just use it. It also allows for some really easy personalization with the themes. I enjoy seeing people's HT shots with their PS3 themes up.

I think the XMB is fine. I wish they'd focus on updating firmware for things other than gaming though. I'd like to see some attention be paid to the blu-ray portion of the system.

Yeah, like what? It seems pretty good as it is. But I would like to see them add in over/under scan adjustment capability.

Good thing that I posted them so other people will know the articles aren't about firmware updates, but the actual aspects of the PS3.

Exactly. XMB is slick. Improve music category functionality and the like.

This is really minor but they should fix the controller status/date & time conflict.

I like it the way it is!

I wouldn't mind them adding Folders within folders under the music section. That way you could have a Metallica folder and in that folder have separate ones for each album.

I would also like to see the machine be able to save more than one wireless internet connection similar to the PSP. I don't move mine around much but it's a pain adding the wep key each time you go some place and then back again.

One thing I'd like to see is an option to toggle the autoplay feature when you put in the disc. Another is the play back from the spot you left off. I think that needs an option when you put the disc in. Things like that. Not major overhauls, but simple little things. I think it's a great blu-ray player, I'd just like a few little things added. Just my opinion.

SD extras could still do with upscaling.

And apparently 1080p60 content played in BD mode is downscaled to 1080i then upscaled to 1080p for output again. I don't know if it's the 60 frames or the AVCHD encoding.

Settings > System Settings > Disc Auto-Start

This works for games and movies, no?

Just an option for the BD's that already support resume-play?

What I meant here was not when you put the disc in that it autmotically luanches the game/movie, but when you start a movie (in many cases a tv series), it begins from the first episode on the disc. I don't like that, and would like for it to be changed.

This would be coinciding with my other wish. I know it's not too big a deal, but I think it prevalent enough to have some type of option to select whether to resume something you've been watching from the point you left off, or to start from the beginning, rather than just assume you want to begin from where you left off.

That's a limitation of the BD you're watching, not the player.

Not sure I can say much more than this should be less of a problem in the future.
