Default Help with out of box surround system

I am starting to look into getting a surround sound system. I do not know a whole lot, but I am not totally ignorant of sound systems. I am looking for one out of the box. I do have one problem the room has 3 almost (“U” shaped) sides so the rear speaker wires would have to go around the same way which would make one wire 6 - 8 ft longer. Would this make a significant delay in sound?

Wants
Subwoofer 1 –2
Speakers
Under $500
HDMI

Pipe dreams
7.1 or 7.2

Any suggestions would be great.

No it won't make a difference. Sound travels thru speaker wires at approx. some ungodly speed (major speeds per Second), so it is not a factor if one speaker is 10' away & the other may be 20' or, or less, etc. - but like the guy posted above, what are you spending $500 on? Speakers alone? Check out the Polk Audios' on www.newegg.com - always a good site. If you like that brand that is. I had the Polk RM6750 (basic starter type system) & that is currently $220 on Newegg w/FREE shipping. The Sub isn't much, so you'll prob. end up needing to upgrade that 1st anyway. But for small speakers, they give you many Placement options & Sound Great!! I had the set for a while & Cranked em' up LOUD Many times without any distortion or cracking/popping, etc. - As noted tho', you'll prob. want to upgrade the 8" Sub. That's what I did with my 1st PSW-10, then I added a 2nd one. Just some info, but we need more from you on how much you want to spend on your Subs & speakers. For your cables & speaker wire, check out www.monoprice.com - they have Many options, GREAT LOW prices, & many members use them as well.

I was hoping to get an out of box set, and then make upgrades as I can. I realize this may be n the low end, but right now I have nothing sound wise. I do not mide doing the upgrades, so I guess a good recever and cheape speakers to start, and Like I said I can upgrade as I get the money. Am I being realistic or am I off my rocker for that price?

As I said, IF you like POLK AUDIO, that's a good starting set for the price. But you'll prob. need a bit more (+$300 for a good receiver) that can decode audio so you get the Dobly Digital (DD) True-HD & DTS-HD MA Audio codecs. Plus you need a Bluray player right? You can prob. find a decent one for $200 or so, maybe a bit less. - Lol. We can ALWAYS Spend more given time. Don't worry: "Upgrade-itis" is a Terrible Disease that afflicts us ALL on this site.

I have a BD player it’s a Panasonic DMP BD30 that I am very happy with and over 300 BDs. I have been a movie collector from the early days of LD, with some VHS then DVD (Well over 1600 at the peak of that) I used o have a surround sound, but we had moved to apartments and really could not use it there so I sold it 10 years ago. We are finally in a house that has enough room for a home theater room and I want to get a new surround sound but need to take it slow. That is why I am looking for an out of box, or like you suggested a cheaper end one. If I do that I would like to get a good recover and whatever speakers I can get, then upgrade the speakers as money permits.

I was looking at your Onkyo 607, how do you like it? And does it have the ability to pass through to just use the TV sound if I do not want to use the surround?
