Default Starting a website?

So my wife and I are planning on building a website for a small start up business. We've never done this so what kind of things would be involved? I know we can get packages through GoDaddy. Would that be the best route?

Would it be best to use Dreamweaver to build it? She's good with it and I only know basic HTML no java or anything.

Can anyone recommend any good sites to get started?

I use GoDaddy...my site is pretty simple and nothing to it...I just wanted the secure email address...

http://icdsoft.com/ and http://www.hostica.com/ are a couple of alternatives for hosting/domain registration.

I know some things. Thanks for the reference, jkwest.

mikejet, how "good are you at computers"? I'm guessing you're at least a little bit technical, since you know some HTML language. Would you be more interested in getting into the nitty gritty of designing it completely yourself and from scratch, or would you rather have a GUI-based program (such as Dreamworks, as you mentioned) do it for you?

Quick things to think about for web-hosting:
  • Domain purchasing and registration
  • Domain hosting (and knowing how much storage and how many e-mail addresses you'll need/want)
  • Site design
  • Marketing (search engine optimization, contact database management e-fliers, ads on Google, ads on associates' websites, etc)
  • Buying online — do you want it, and how will you want it done?

I'm happy to answer questions you might have through this thread, but feel free to e-mail for greater detail on any questions you might have as well.

That's jk and bret, right now we are just in the preliminary planning stage so we aren't fully prepared to purchase a domain or anything. We know what we are going to do but not how we want to present it yet.

You can sign up for 000webhost for now, which will give you a good chunk of free hosting space, and that way you can mess around with your idea for a bit, and work any kinks out before opening the site up to the public and hosting it on a better [paid] server. It also supports MySQL, which is nice.
