Australia Blu Ray/DVD Storage

Hey

Anyone know of some good options for storing Blus and DVDs? I was eyeing off those Can-Am setups, but they cost way too much basically.I want to find a drawer system that can hold a lot cases.

I will prob look into shelves, but I liked the idea of having it more condensed and more out of sight in a way.

I also wish there was a condensed, local option of this Can-Am set up that could store thousands of cases. I looked into this a year back and couldn't find anything suitable.

I ended up going for the Ikea Billy bookcases with glass doors and stacked the collection back to back. Not perfect, but I'm reasonably happy with it.

If there was a local alternative to the Can-Am set up, I would definitely go for it.

I've also got 3 Billy bookcases for BD/DVD's and 3 for CD'S and they work just fine for me. I've put some dressed pine at the back of each shelf to have all the cases sitting closer to the front though.

The funny thing is we also have an Ikea Lack bookcase (no longer available) on its side that we're using as an entertainment unit.

Did you buy the optional glass shelves for the Billy Bookcases? They look rather nice.

Storage shopping can be a bit of task. I found it very hard to find something that suited my needs, in the end I decided to have some shelves custom made.

The first world problem I've found is that most local shelves/storage units fit 500 to 1000 thousand DVDs/Blu-rays max if you are lucky. It is very difficult to find shelving that fits 3000+.

If anyone has any good local options for storing large collections, I'd also love to know.

My collection is a fairly good size, but prob not close to 2000. I want to find something that will have room for the foreseeable future too. I'd want to store DVDs, Blus and games.

I'll probably have to look into something like the IKEA shelves I guess. I'd much prefer some sort of cabinet setup though

I'll probably go for the ones with glass doors.

If you look up "dvd shelf" on ebay you'll see heaps of shelving units which are really efficiently designed for DVDs and blu-rays and are usually only about $120 or even less. They have shelves which are adjustable in position and can store about 500 blu-rays.

Adjustable shelves often bow under the weight of your collection after a while, when this happens it is not a very nice look IMO.

Not sure why these would bow. I have one myself. The individual shelves are about 30cm or so wide and just slot into 3 vertical columns. Mine came with about 10 more shelves than I'm currently using. The shelving unit is no deeper than necessary for blu-rays as well so it's space efficient.

You didn't mention a specific type in your original post, you just made a general comment with regards to efficiency. Obviously the shorter the shelf, the chances of bowing reduces. I have seen images of peoples shelves on here that are similar in design to what you are referring to, where each shelf is roughly the same length as you have described, and there is some visible bowing.

I think your idea of efficient is also a bit different to mine. After having a quick look on Ebay using "dvd shelf" as the description, many of them appeared to have the same measurements. The shelves you are referring to are 102cm L x 23.5cm D x 194.5cm H, and only hold 528 dvd's per shelf. I live in an apartment, and maximizing space is important. The measurements for my shelves are 125cm L x 24cm D x 210cm H, and currently hold around 1750 Blu-ray's over two shelves, with the majority of them being 14mm thick cases (not to mention, the shelves and frames of those Ebay shelves are a lot thinner, and are nowhere near as sturdy). Three of the shelves you have suggested wouldn't even hold this many, and would take up more space, roughly an additional 550mm in length.

Nah. Just the standard matching wooden pieces. If we had glass you'd see the dressed pine we have behind the discs and that wouldn't look nice.

Well I was referring to the specific type of shelf that sells for the price I described and is all over ebay when you search what I wrote.

Well that's very good, I've had a look at your shelf now and I see that there is one extra row of height and that the shelf appears wider. I'm not sure in terms of space efficiency if there is that drastic a difference though apart from the extra one row from height. There's about 6cm of width in mine that isn't taken up by blu-rays.. I find the shelf i have to be more efficient than most other storage options I've come across which is why I mentioned it but congratulations on having a better one, I apologize if I have given terrible advice to the OP by mentioning it. Perhaps they could find it useful if they don't have the money to custom make one.

Anyway, in regards to sturdiness, I can only speculate. My shelf is second hand ($40 gumtree), and in the several years with it's previous owner it did not bend. I can not imagine the slight weight of the blu-rays currently on it bending the shelves but who am I to say? All I can say is that the shelves feel more than adequate for the task they are being used for.

You weren't very clear on this in your original post, like I said previously, your comment indicated that you were talking in general:

"If you look up "dvd shelf" on ebay you'll see heaps of shelving units which are really efficiently designed for DVDs and blu-rays"

Surely you see how someone could get this impression from what you wrote. When you search on Ebay for furniture, often plenty of different designs and sizes appear. With this in mind, I shouldn't necessarily have to go over to Ebay and do a search to understand what you meant, it is up to you to articulate this in your posts.

You are correct, they are wider (therefore each row can hold more), and have an extra shelf. As I mention previously, 3 of the type of shelves you have suggested would be required to store roughly 1600 movies, which is less than what mine holds, and would take up more floor space in my apartment. The measurements were carefully calculated when designing my shelves to maximise efficiency, that is the beauty of custom, you can tailor to your needs.

Come on mate, this comment of yours is a bit silly. I responded to your general comment and made a general statement about adjustable shelves bowing. You brought up efficiency, once in your original post, and a second time in your response to my post, therefore I was merely explaining to you that they aren't as efficient as what my needs require. My posts weren't meant to be taken the way you have taken them.

If it makes you feel better, I paid a small fortune for them, and I overstated in the early hours this morning how many they hold, I was off by about 50. It had just been a while since I had thought about it.

Sorry, it seemed like you were denigrating my suggestion that the shelves were efficient for what the OP was looking for, I sensed a condescending tone to your comment, but apologies if I misread it.

I'd love some of those dvd/blu units from IKEA

I too am in the market for another storage solution. I've got shit in piles everywhere. I quite like the Rimu classic looking bookcases too. They're sturdy, reasonably cheap (got mine for $400) and look great filled with trashy blu rays

I have one of those eBay units Cev and Coen are referring too, and even with the shorter shelf pieces, and lightness of blu-rays and cases, there is still definite signs in bowing. Better timber would solve that problem.

Still a decent option though. My space is limited, so it fits the bill perfectly, and at under $150 delivered, I can't complain.

Holds 504 standard 14mm blu-ray cases (incl Steelbooks)

I kind of wish we had the thinner cases here in Aus. I just don't see any reason to have the thicker ones and waste space.

I understand why it's there, but I really don't like the panel that sticks out at the bottom. It's like it's just asking for your toe to be stubbed on it.
