Question The Expanse Season 5 & The Handmaid's Tale Season 4 (Blu ray releases)

Hey folks,

Anyone heard anything regarding S5 and S4 releases for The Expanse and Handmaid's Tale?

Amazon/Alcon released season 4 back in Dec. 2020 but I cannot find any details on S5 yet....

Same with The Handmaid's Tale. Season 3 Ended in August 2019, and They had released the blu ray in November 2019.

Any details would be appreciated if anyone has heard anything.

For The Expanse, the S4 Blu ray seemed to drop on sort of a promotional timeline for season 5, so we'll probably get it right around the announcement or release of S6. Since Season 6 should be released this December, I guess around a month from now.

No idea about the Handmaid's Tale though.

Handmaid's Tale is kind of in a weird situation. It's on Hulu but MGM owns it, and MGM was just using Fox to release stuff through, then once Disney bought Fox, MGM used WB to release Vikings... but now Amazon owns MGM.

It's possible that Amazon might keep the existing relationship with MGM and WB and use them as a distribution partner like Alcon did with Universal, but we'll have to wait and see. Amazon could see it as a way to make money off a competitor's property, or could see it as promoting them. So who knows.

Season 4 of The Expanse was announced for bluray when they announced the releasedate of s5. It seems they dont follow that pattern now, so Im not sure its still coming to bluray.

Handmaid's Tale has had no regular schedule for its home video releases.

S1 wasn't released on BD for nearly a year after it aired, until right before S2 aired.

S2 was released 5 months after the season finished airing

S3 was released just 3 months after the season finished airing

And then, of course, S4 started airing almost a year late, because they had to shut down filming midway through due to COVID and couldn't pick up again until that fall.

I follow both of their official Instagram pages, and they haven't begun filming S5 yet.

Perhaps they're holding a S4 BD until they're closer to S5.

Looks like there may only be a DVD release of S4 for Handmaid's Tale. Release date is April 5th.

I'm still hopeful for The Expanse, but Handmaid's Tale is Fox/MGM and that can't mean anything good.

The Handmaid's Tale is MGM, but their home video deal is now at Warner Bros, so that's who's releasing the DVD.

A real shame there's only a DVD. I watched the show on Hulu just after I got my new 4K TV, and I'm fairly sure S4 was shot in 4K.

They clearly gave up on waiting to release this tied into S5, since they haven't even begun filming that yet.

What really bugs me is not only do these companies switch to dvd from a blu ray release schedule but then they have the supreme gall to charge almost as much for it as the blu! That's like sitting down in a restaurant for a nice steak, waiting 20 minutes and then being offered a $35 cheeseburger as a substitute.
Some would say to be grateful for anything on physical these days, but it's my hard earned money and i'll be damned if i'm going to blow it on a physically inferior release. It's not 1999 anymore, 8k tv's are on the market and i'm sorry, 480p resolution just doesn't cut it.
If dvd is all there is, i'll gladly wait years to buy it second hand in a pawn shop. Inferior efforts are rewarded with an apathetic consumer.

Such a shame. I hate it when shows start on blu-ray, but later seasons end up dvd only (if it even gets a dvd release - still no Homeland season 8 dvd...).

That really sucks balls, if The Handmaid’s take is going to be DVD only. Hope they change their mind.
Fingers crossed that Australia or the UK does a Blu-Ray release (or any f*cking region for that matter).

Still holding out for a S5-6 Blu-Ray of The Expanse as well… (and wishing for MCU and Star Wars TV series on Disney Plus to get a BD release, ‘cos the mouse house is not getting my tithe! Or any other streaming service for that matter. F*ck streaming. I don’t want to rent, I want to own.

It is such bullshit that a BD release for a series goes DVD only. Other examples (of TV shows that I have bought on BD, with at least 2 seasons):

Orange is the New Black (S1-6 BD, S7 DVD only [Germany has a S7 BD, but no English subs…A lot of Spanish speaking scenes).

Homeland (S1-7* [UK has S7 BD], S8 DVD only in Japan ONLY!).

The Duece (S1-2 BD, S3 DVD only).

Silicon Valley (S1-4 BD, S5-6 DVD only).

Modern Family (S1-4 BD, S5-S11 DVD only).

Archer S1-6 BD, then DVD from then on.

Yeah, it really bothers me when a show starts on Blu-ray and ends up going DVD only. Fargo is the one that bugs me the most. One of the best shows of all time.

As much as I hate to admit it, I don't think the MCU D+ shows will get a release... Disney has only released Agents of SHIELD in Japan in crazy expensive sets and completely abandoned the Netflix shows everywhere, so I doubt they'll release the D+ shows, since those are exclusive to their service and one of their main draws for subscriptions.

WB released season 1 of Mike & Molly and 2 Broke Girls on BD then dropped them for the rest of their runs.

Agents of Shield got a UK and Aussie release as well. Albeit, I believe they were not Disney Plus shows…

One would hope that eventually, if D+ was to do a Phase 4 release, they would include their TV shows… Or even in the future, several years following their release on their renting digital video service, they would find a new revenue stream.
There would be plenty of Marvel and Star Wars fan boys (myself being the latter), that would pay big bucks for a BD release. As it is now, I couldn’t be f*cked streaming them.
These shows sound good (The Mandalorian and Book of Boba Fett), but they don’t sound like they are Breaking Bad/The Sopranos/Game of Thrones good. And with the MCU, I will fill in the gaps in storyline by watching the films.

I lived through the VHS rental days, so I hate this subscription shit. If it’s not good enough for BD, I am not going to bother. Hence why I’m so pissed off when a dizzy won’t finish off a series they released on BD for more than two seasons (and sucked me in, in the process).

I mean the last two seasons of Agents of SHIELD were only released in Japan, 1-5 were released other places as well. The bad thing about a Phase 4 set is that that people who buy all the movies probably wouldn't be able to afford the set just to get the TV shows.

Or maybe just a phase 4 TV set… I am buying Steelbooks of the Phase 4 films as we go, so it would be redundant if I bought both movies and TV.

However, I would pay for the whole d@mn thing, should it give me access to the films. Even if it cost a year or two’s subscription ($120 to $240 Aussie dollars), it would be worth it, just to own the TV shows, so I can watch them whenever I like and not have to pay Disney money for the rest of my life.
