Default Are plasmas closer to CRT.

Hello everybody,

I currently own 2 lcds (sony xbr 7 and samsung 630), I am really disapointed at how DVDs look compared to CRT tvs. I have a pretty hefty blu ray collection but its nothing compared to the DVDs I own. And will continue to buy dvs
From what I have gathered a plasma might be the better way to go for me.
Can anyone comment on how dvds look on their plasma compared to other devices, and also I want to get a 50", so I am taking suggestions to. I will be sitting 8 feet away, and the main purpose of this tv will be HD cable and DVDs, I will be moving my XBR7 to the bedroom.

My budget is $1000.

Thanks

we have a 50" full hDTV that is plazma from hitachi. And it's very nice. And I too sit about 8 feet away form it as well. My PS3 upscales prety nice when I watch a rented DVD. As for my opinoin the only thing I'd be willing to upgrade to form my plazma is an LED. Bu that won't be for a while though.

OP, definitely plasma would be the way to go to get a picture closer to what you're used to with CRT.

If your budget is steadfastly set at $1,000 and you want a 50" TV, consider the 1366x768 X1 50" plasma from Panasonic, you can get it from Vanns, an authorized Panasonic dealer, shipped for $799 which is a pretty sweet price for a 50" TV no?

Thank. Also I was looking at Tvs last night. I am pretty sure I am about to compare apple to oranges. How would the Samsung edge lit leds compare. Looks like I will have to raise my budget.

Also on plasma research, I spent a good 30 minutes on the phone with crutchfield last night and they are saying to go with a g15 or samsung 650.

How does the S1 compare two these 2 models.

The S1 is the entry-level 1080p plasma from Panasonic.
The G10 is above that, then the G15 which has a thinner panel.
The G-series offers better blacks and 48Hz mode which provides a cinematic flicker like 48Hz does in the cinema, but it's not for everyone and if it bothers you you'd likely just choose the 60Hz mode.
The V-series is the best panel Panasonic make in 50" size and it has a 2" panel and 96Hz mode for Blu-ray 1080p24 sources. It has the best blacks and best contrast ratio of all the Panny panels.

The Samsung LED edge-lit LCD's compare, but the motion resolution and blacks from a wide viewing angle which directly affect contrast ratio will be better on the plasma's. You need to go to a full LED backlit LCD to get the same performance as the better plasma's and then you're sacrificing viewing angles, motion resolution in most settings and uneven screen lighting in all but the 850 series LED-LCD sets...which cost almost twice as much as the V10 series plasma's from Panasonic.

If you want the best 50" TV on the market you can get a Pioneer KRP-500M for $1,549 shipped from BuyDig

http://www.buydig.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=PRKRP500M

From a price:performance ratio you can't beat plasma for flat panels.

I just uploaded a 480i image (from on-demand cable) on my S1 in my HT gallery. Take a look at that if you want an idea of what dvd looks like on a plasma. Compared to my XBR4, the S1 definitely handles SD material better.

Is the aspect ratio off in that picture? Is it 4:3 stretched?

Not very familiar with the Sammy's - from what I hear they have excellent colours but the black levels are a bit better on the G-series.

Again if the KRP-500M is within $100 of the G10 I'd seriously take the Pioneer unless you really need speakers.

Doby, how much of a difference is there between the Pioneer KRP and Panny V10, aside from the Panny being a few $100 more?

According to HD Guru the Panny can resolve more shadow detail in dark scenes, but cannot reach the inky black levels that the Pioneer can. Because of the supreme black levels the Pioneer will also have a better ANSI contrast ratio than the V10. Both perform video tests flawlessly.

No matter what, either set is absolutely gorgeous....but the KRP will simply disappear in a black room completely.

I'm not a fan of the HD Guru at all, he didn't even know what display he was looking at awhile back. Thats when I lost confidence... All my 9G Kuro's disappear in a dark room. With crazy high ANSI's and 0.00fL - 0.01fL they are just plain sick... They are as close as your gunna get to what a CRT brings to the table , but in a much sweeter package.

Sonny,
Two things:
1) Which display did he not know he was looking at?
2) 0.01fL is not plain sick at all, the G10 Viera's beat that. Perhaps you meant 0.001?

HD Guru constantly beats on manufacturer's heads to change the way they list contrast ratios and always seems to get the most sets tested for performance every year for measurements that matter. I think he does a great job - only issue I ever had was describing 48Hz as "unwatchable". He never answered e-mails on that one.
