Angry Annoying hum from my ED A2-300

When I first got it everything was great, and I was really impressed. But, recently it started humming when turned on. I have tried adjusting the gain and phase but nothing helps - besides turning the gain all the way down I have tried pulling out the plug that "splits" the feed cable and putting the cable into each plug separately, it does not help. Is my amp bad?

PS I have just emailed eD, so I will see what they say. I was just hoping someone on here has had the same issue and knows what the next step is.

Thanks Guys

You may have a ground hum problem. Read Ground Hum & Ground Loop Isolators.

thanks for the info. I went back there and tried to figure something out. I unplugged everything and rearranged some wires. I learned

1. when I unplug my tv - it gets a lot louder
2. it seems to change if people walk by it

what should I try next?

edit - unplugging the cable box and moving the router/cable box did nothing either

edit 2 - I am using a nice sub cable as well

Make sure you separate all the cables and wires. Try different wall outlets. Your last resort is to buy ground loop isolators for your sub and your computer/cable box. There are good ones listed in the link above.

BD is correct as it sounds like a ground loop problem. I have one question though, you said everything has been fine up until now, did you do or add anything recently?

Well, I moved. Set everything back up and it worked fine. The only thing I have added is a cable box. But, when it was unplugged nothing changed. I don't understand why when I unplug the TV it gets A LOT worse.

Can someone show me a link to a good surge protector and power conditioner? If Sears sells either it would be great since I get a discount there.

Also, I changed the plug with no success.

OK, everything was fine when you set everything back up after you're move, right? And the problem started when the cable box was hooked up, right? You said you unplugged the cable box but have you tried disconnecting the coax (IN) from the wall or box and see if the hum goes away?

ungrounded cable TV is the #1 entry source for a ground loop.

ding ding ding, we have a winner. my cable comes from the floor into a splitter then into the box and modem. when I disconnected the feed from the splitter it went off. How do I fix it?

Check and make sure they grounded the coax coming into the house correctly or if there is even a ground. There should be a grounding block where the cable enters the house and that block should be grounded.

Resetting the box wont solve that issue. Can you do it yourself, sure if you know what to do and look for You can also have them come out and depending how knowledgeable the tech is he might be able to fix it. I'm sure it's not grounded correctly or not at all.

You should have something that looks like this where the coax enters the house.

he came this morning and my gf was there. he tried to say it was not his problem. Till she turned on the reciever and it started humming, then told him to unplug the cable. he went outside, came back in and said that it was grounded in the box. she said the noise is better, but still there

It sounds to me like he did a half-a$$ job of grounding it. Basically something to get her to shut up so he could leave. However, when you get home and are able to see what he did, you might be able to take further corrective action yourself and get the issue completely resolved.

Do you have a box right on the house or is this the box at the pole or in the yard? I wonder how they have it grounded or if it's grounded correctly. Do you have a ground block where the coax enters you're house like the link I posted yesterday?

They can conceivably have the cable properly grounded to an earth ground and still have it introduce noise due to the difference in that earth ground and the one that the home would be connected to. Ground loops are tricky little things, and can even vary from season to season as the soil and moisture level changes allowing the voltage difference to present itself from grounding point to grounding point. And I shot the OP and email as well.

Just curious on that Crutchfield link- don't you have to actually attach or ground that to something? I am 90% sure my cable's already grounded, and I don't have a hum, but I was curious as I know it affects a lot of folks.
