Just curious here if anyone has heard (or even Cares) about one of my favorite Films: King of Hearts (1966)?
It doesn't show-up here in any form that I can find. (Maybe I'm searching it wrong) No Forum mention or even a Notification Sign-Up Page for possible Release Dates. I really LOVE this Film! It gets a full 4 (Four) Stars over at IMDB! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060908/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_of_Hearts_(1966_film) |

It's one of those curious foreign films that was a huge hit in the US but a big disappointment everywhere else, especially France where critics were unimpressed and audience numbers unimpressive despite director Philippe de Broca coming off a run of huge local hits.

I love this film. I think I saw it four or maybe even five times in the theater in 1967 when I was in college at Northwestern. One of those times the theater got a dubbed print. That was utterly godawful. By then I knew the dialogue quite well, having had seen it subbed at least three times, and I knew the dubbed words, much of the time, were horrible mistranslations (besides which, dubbing is horrible, even when done accurately). The theater apologized, said the wrong print had been sent to them and gave everyone free passes.
I remember hearing a long time ago that it had played in Boston for about five years straight. I googled it and I see that it was at a theater in Cambridge and played there from 1971-1976 although it had been released in the US in 1967. Anyway, I love the film and I have the Criterion laserdisc. Please, Criterion, release this on blu-ray. |

I have the MGM DVD of this, which is very weak (non-anamorphic 2.35:1). I'm a big fan of Alan Bates and Genvieve Bujold and both give nice performances in this. I'm not all that crazy about the film aside from these two actors but I like it enough that I'd get a BD if issued.

There were a couple of repertory houses near me that played King of Hears with Harold and Maude as a double bill on a regular basis throughout the 1970s and 1980s until they both closed down. |

The whole movie was dubbed. Otherwise the English would have been inconsistent with the parts that were mistranslated in French and German. You've got to realize it's been almost fifty years since I saw this print so my memory may not be the best but the line I remember most is, "The knight chimes at midnight" being changed to "Lancelot chimes at midnight" or "Sir Lancelot chimes at midnight." |

I saw the King of Hearts at the Orson Welles Cinema in Cambridge, MA when I was a college senior. It was on a double bill with Give Her the Moon. I saw it again in University City, MO in 1979. I have always wanted to own a copy, and I hope that is shows up on Blu-ray.
