Default What is up with LCD's and LED's having panel issues?

This is very frustrating to me. I know this has been talked about alot but I just recently bought a Sony Bravia EX500/40 inch. I bring it home and instantly notice cloudiness and flashlighting. I kept it for two weeks and returned it because I couldn't stand it anymore. I went with a Sharp Quattron 40 inch (LC-40LE810UN). Very nice set by the way. For my money it was much nicer than the Sony Bravia. Anyway there was faint clouding that has all but gone away but however there is some flashlighting in the center of the top of the frame. It's minor and it only shows up in bright scenes not dark ones. I think it's light leaks from the LED light panel but I can't really tell. Anyway it's really not that bad. Its only noticable on certain types of material. I'm just sick of spending $900 on a set and getting questionable product. I like the Sharp so I am gonna just live with it. I hope it doesn't get worse. If anyone has had this issue with and LED please let me know so that I am not paranoid that it will break on me. I read somewhere about Sharps having an issue in the middle where the panels connect but I don't think that's it. I would imagine if it was i would notice it on everything. I have a warranty and a service plan from Ultimate Electronics so I guess if it becomes a problem down the road I can have it replaced or fixed. I just hate the uncertanty of it all. Plus my store didn't have anymore of this model so I can't even exchange it at the moment. Sorry for the rant just looking for alternate points of view on the subject. Oh and I'm not interested in Plasma's because of a bad experience I had with one of them before plus I'm not a fan of image retention, it bugs me.

This is why I am staying with what I have and not upgrading anytime soon. My 46V5100 had very minor clouding issues early on but they went away after time. But I am hearing more and more about the issues your experiencing and its to bad because I thought LED was supposed to take care of the clouding issues. Hang in there buddy.

I will say that the Sharp LED is pretty darn cool. The image is quite good so like I said I'm just gonna live with the minor imperfections. It seems like they just found new ways to mask the cloudiness rather than eliminating it. Overall it's better than the Sony I bought. However, if the clouding wasn't as bad on the Sony I bought I probably would've just kept it.

It's an artifact of edge lit LCD. You do not get even light uniformity. Back lit is better. Local dimming will give you better black levels by shutting off the LED light source in black scenes. If the dimmed area does not line up with the lit area of the screen then you will see a halo effect.

A good Plasma is still best.

Sorry to hear this is happening to your set. The manufacturers need to fix this problem.

Thanks for your answer, this is the first real answer I've gotten on the subject. It makes a lot of sense. It's really not that bad. It's either deal with image retention on a plasma, cloudiness and flashlighting on an lcd or this new anomoly on a led/lcd. Actually the less annoying is the led issue so I guess I will just live with it. In most cases it's unnoticable, I will say that I'm not sure whether the RGBY is such a great idea. You can calibrate it out for the most part but RGB tends to suffer for the Y if you get my drift. In some cases it helps but it seems to hinder more.
