Default What gives Disney?

I have been seeing TV ads for Disney's animated version of Alice In Wonderland, but only on dvd. Why not blu??? What's going on Disney? This would have been a must for me on blu so why the hold-out?

This has been raised on a number of threads - agreed, very annoying. There were rumours of a release in other countries, particularly in Italy where one website had it for pre-order, but it's not there anymore. It's just pointless; a BD release makes sense business-wise, and I'm sure that if the new DVD is a new remaster (as is advertised), it will have been an HD-ready transfer so there's no reason not to put it out. The Great Mouse Detective is also getting a DVD re-release soon with a supposedly new restoration, and I have the same sentiments towards that.

I'll probably get both on DVD if there's no BD announcement in the next couple of months - I do want to watch them again and have resigned myself to getting some Disney DVDs so I don't have to wait the years to rewatch some of my childhood faves on BD.

Disney has made a business decision to abandon a Blu-ray release for almost anything that is not a huge, premium title. They actually pulled back in terms of overall catalog releases in 2009 on Blu-ray. While their classic Disney and Pixar films are getting wonderful treatments, everything else is being abandoned on Blu-ray. Look at the number of movies we know are authored and ready to be released, but are nowhere in sight. Dumbo is done and has already been released in Mexico. The same with the fifth season of Grey's Anatomy.

What to them is considered huge other than the ones already released?

That's the reason right there; so they can sell it to you twice. They did the same with Jungle Book and that really upsets me.

The only reason there even is an Alice release right now is to cash in on all the Alice hype with Burton's movie.

They basically threw something together really quick and just released it all on DVD to get a few extra bucks. It's been rumored to have a Blu-ray release with the Burton's release.

Dumbo and Alice in Wonderland and possibly Aladdin will all be out on Blu-ray by next year, and they are all non-Diamond Edition titles.

Everyone needs to settle down.
If it weren't for the Tim Burton movie, this would have never been scheduled. This has nothing to do with whether Disney wants to release any of its non-Diamond edition titles on Blu or not.

It is more than the animated movies. Disney has basically stopped issuing catalog films. Pulp Fiction has been missing in action since it was first rumored two years ago.

I'd say Disney's staggering of their releases is made up for by their fantastic coupons and outstanding transfers for almost every single blu-ray.

If it was just a rumor, then why are you disappointed in them not releasing it?

I'm sure the new 2-dvd set of the animated Alice In Wonderland is pretty much the same as The Masterpice Version from 2004, with some new stuff related to the Tim Burton version added.

Pulp Fiction has nothing to do with Disney's lack in releasing catalog titles. Miramax is basically up for grabs if someone bids the right amount of money - why would they pay for a restoration/remastering only for said release to be out of print within weeks/months.

Though I'm sure Disney will release more catalog films when blu-ray becomes more mainstream - followed by the releases crumbling in quality.

I picked it up back in 04 and it looks great. So I have no intention of double dipping.

Hello, sorry if this is in the wrong section, but a friend of mine who surfs this forum told me he has seen in a thread or 2, of people swapping the disney blu-ray coupons. I didn't think it was against board regulations since it's not advertising a website or anything like that. Anyone with insight on the matter would be greatly appricated! Thank you in advance!

P.S.- Sorry that it is off topic, new members not being allowed to create new threads, please don't think i am trying to hijack this thread.
