Default Blu ray cases are really unnatractive

I know that a lot of people are obsessive about uniformity in the BD cases. They like them to all have the same look . But personally, I think Blu ray is hampered aesthetically by these cases with the big blu strips etc. To me they are bland and unattractive.

I was watching my Treasure of the Sierra Madre DVD the other day and thinking what a beautiful set that is. A beautiful slipcase and magnificent artwork.

Similarly, I was looking at my SE DVD's of The Towering Inferno and The Sand Pebbles, again beautiful artwork with great slipcases too. It is interesting to compare them to their almost yucky looking BD counterparts.

So yeah, I think DVD cases have so much more class and I think our BD cases will look horribly tacky and dated in the years to come.

That's why I like the keepcases Criterion makes for their BDs. They're just compact versions of their DVD cases.

I'm probably gonna get flamed for this, but I REALLY liked th HD DVD-cases. That dark red was really classy, and the blue that the BD-cases have usually stick out like a sore thumb. I get that there is a need to differentiate, but that blue colour never really sat too well with me. Just my two cents...

For one, i like the darker blue European cases: They are more stable and the deeper blue color looks much better imo.

I also think a lot of BD artwork just isn't very nice to look at (didn't we just have another thread about this?). Many times it looks more like an ad for the movie, than a nice cover for something to keep.

Then i agree that quite a lot of times, a nice DVD box looks much better than the normal Blu-ray case. Here in Europe, we often get the "special edition" DVD in form of a digipack with a nice, sturdy cardboard cover. If it weren't for the HighDef content on Blu's, i'd prefer to buy the DVD...

However, having my movies in HD is much more important than how the case looks.

I like the smaller Blu-ray cases. I hated the ultra large for nothing packages they use to give us in the early days of DVD

I don't have a problem with Blu-ray cases. As long as they keep the disc itself safe, I'm satisfied. That's not to say I don't love the collector's editions WB has done for some of its classic films, but most films don't need that treatment.

Well since we watch the movie and not the case, I don't care what the case looks like. so long as the movie looks good

I love the blu-ray cases, specially the thin ones, (USA and Spain share the same), but not the UK's ones which are fat and ugly to look at :P

I think almost all BD cases are ugly to look at. Although there are a few exceptions.

I love the Blu-ray cases. Firstly, the colour helps differentiate my 350+ Blu-ray collection from my 500+ DVD collection. Secondly, I like that they are smaller in design. Thirdly, blue is my favourite colour, so I'm biased.

Like others have said previously though, we watch the content contained on the disc itself and not the cases. Therefore, if the Blu-ray cases had been designed any differently I would still have 350+ of them on my shelf.

By the way, was there any other colour that would have suited the format cases? Since Blu-ray uses a blue laser and uses said colour in its format designation they couldn't very well make the cases purple or green.

Yes, content comes first, that's a given. But it doesn't lessen the simplistic beauty of a nice case vs a gaudy one.

The cases do not need to be ONE colour. Why do you think they have to be a particular colour?

I couldn't care less about the cases color, cover art, disc art, or slip covers. I want the best AQ & PQ that only Blu-ray can deliver. They get put on shelves with the spine only showing for crying out loud.

For me it's quite the opposite. I prefer Blu-ray cases over DVD cases in general for these reasons:
  • Blu-ray cases are compacter and have more rounded edges, giving them a cuter look
  • Blu-ray cases are blue-transparent, which looks nicer on a shelf than the black non-transparent DVD cases
Of course, artwork various from a movie to movie basis. I've seen DVD releases with better cover artwork but I've also seen Blu-rays with better cover artwork.

However, when talking purely about the cases themselves, I personally prefer Blu-ray.

A few examples of covers where I think the Blu-ray cover art looks better or comes across better than the DVD cover art:

Wild Hogs

Stargate:

Yeah, I prefer BD cases because they're "cuter".

I like the transparency because you can see if there is an insert missing or not.
