Default Good basic Blu-ray player

Hi all,

I read the sticky, and it seems a bit updated aside from talk about the Oppos. I would LOVE a new Oppo, but it's not in our budget at this time. I just want a solid Blu-ray player with no bells/whistles that delivers excellent picture quality on Blu-rays. (We still have an upconverting DVD player for those...even though we rarely watch DVD now) Any good suggestions on a top-notch picture (don't care about BD Live or networking at this time) for $150 or < ?

Thanks!

You can get the Magnavox NB500MG1F for less then $100 at wal-mart. It is perhaps the most under-rated bluray player out there. I have had the Mag 530 for nearly a year now and have had no issues. Good luck with your purchase.

I have the Magnavox too (though not 100% sure it's the exact model). Got it at Walmart.com for $78 a while back. My main issue with it, is that it is noisy. Constant 'purring' sound, so you have to turn the sound up to avoid hearing it. Otherwise pretty decent player with good PQ.

Check your Best Buy next time you go there. I have seem them selling open box Sony BD S360 for around $50. Can't go wrong with a Sony Blu-ray player.

I also bought the Magnavox at Walmart for eight bucks. It convinced me that there was definitely a difference between DVD and Blu Ray.

An excellent deal is the Best Buy brand Insignia which I got for 130. It has built in wireless which I didn't care about at the time. However, I have become a Netflix addict due to the unlimited streaming! I actually watch Netflix more than DVDs at this point because they have seasons of TV shows I've never watched (24, Bones, Lost, Dexter, Weeds) and TV shows I love to watch (all seasons of X Files; most of Law & Order: CI and SVU).

Samsung makes two or three in that price range, also.

My first Player was the panasonic DMP-BD601K originally it was $250 last year but has gone down in price as far as PQ it has excellent picture in fact Panasonic advertises their proprietary video processor in their units for color and clarity accuracy. If netflix support is a need, get the BD65k it's the upgraded model for this year. It goes for around $179 I also have the magnavox and a sony I have sony's new BDP-S570 which is 3d ready but that is not a feature I need right now. Anyway, out of all three players I have they all seem to perform equally well. The sony is the fastest player on the market this year Also it supports SACD if you want that support for cheaper then the oppo.

This panasonic is around $125 now at walmart and costco - panny is WAY better than a samsung if you only have one. I have the samsung and I bought a panny because of all the discs I cant play on my current sammy.

I just saw that unit at Sam's Club for $108 and thought that was a good deal...do you know if that is a nationwide price on the K-Mart deal? I think that sounds like the best deal/player all things considered.

I don't know if my player or yours is the anomaly, but my Magnavox doesn't make much if any noise at all.

Well, the KMart website has it for $199 and our local store has a similar model number for $179, so looks like the $108 at Sam's Club for the Sony is my best deal...thanks for all input!

Thanks!
The Sony BDP-S360, a fully-featured Profile 2 player, is currently on clearance at Target stores around the U.S. for around/under $100.
