I'm in the USA and am about to place a large order at Amazon FR (region B locked discs are fine as I have a region-free player). What are the top recommendations?

You can also use the top rated list with France as your preference and you'll see alll titles there, reveiewd, with all your audio options. All of the above titles are great, but I speak french so can't help you with subs. Give it a try, very interesting search to do.

I'd say 1492 Conquest of Paradise is also a must have, especially if you're a Ridley Scott fan.

Buy Nikita US disc instead, real cheap and the best version.
District 13 first movie is overall best on french disc but is missing eng subs. Second movie US disc is regionfree, have subs and HD audio.

Martyrs is awesome if you like horror and have a strong stomach. The UK version is far cheaper, even with shipping. Region B locked.

Good suggestion. Also, get Serpico if you can, which is an excellent Blu Ray overall.

Not many movies are like it, since it contains no dialogue, but it's still a pretty good sci-fi movie.
