Default Postal Worker Admits Stealing Netflix Movies

I always kind of wondered if stuff like this ever happened... sadly, it does:

Postal Worker Admits Stealing Netflix Movies
By : Erik Gruenwedel | Posted: 27 May 2010

A former postal employee has pleaded guilty to stealing Netflix movies while on duty.

Houston-based Rudolph Luna Jr. pleaded guilty to the federal felony charge May 25 in U.S. District Court, admitting to stealing Netflix movies, which came into his possession while a postal employee, according to the postal service.

Luna was indicted March 17, and charged with one count of theft of mail following an investigation after Netflix security advised the postal service that about 114 movies were not delivered in a select area code.

Luna came to the attention of the inspectors after agents saw him take several Netflix movies from the delivery bins of other routes and place them into his delivery bin. A USPS inspector later prepared multiple Netflix movies to be collected and returned along Luna’s route.

After watching Luna move several movies into his personal backpack, inspectors detained Luna and found one of the special Netflix envelopes in his backpack.

Following his Jan. 26, 2009, arrest, Luna confessed his thefts to USPS inspectors. Luna admitted stealing Netflix movies over a period of several moths.

Luna, who is free on bond since his arrest, will be sentenced Nov. 15, facing a maximum punishment of five years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine.

Separately, apparently not only Netflix movies are in demand, as shares of the Los Gatos, Calif.-based service May 27 closed up $4.06 to close at $108.86 per share. The stock is up 35% since the launch of the Apple iPad April 2.

Never could understand why people would jeopardize a good paying job with benefits and retirement for items worth a minute fraction of that. I knew a guy years ago who lost his $50K/year job (plus benefits) because he was caught stealing toilet paper from the company. If you're going to steal, at least make sure the benefits are worth more than the costs of getting caught!

Very foolish indeed. Especially for used DVDs, which are only a few $ a piece these days.

Takes a special kind of knucklehead to risk a government pension over a few movies. Now should I say this or not...

Like a government employee.

A story like this one seems to pop up every year or so. I wonder how much missing mail was purposely lost or thrown away by the carriers? It always makes me wonder when something goes missing in the mail.

Of all things to steal... DVD's. Brilliant.

It's already been said, but come on. This is your job, your life... Not a good call, Mr. Postal Worker.

Heres a better story, High RoLleR!!

California Postal Employee Pleads Guilty to Mail Theft
A major DVD movie rental company alerted us about the possible theft of inbound DVD movies at the San Bernardino P&DC. The company’s records indicated that between January and October 2006, customers reported not receiving 9,303 DVD movies. Our investigation determined that a Mail Handler was responsible for the rifling and theft of the DVD mailings. In addition, the Mail Handler was responsible for the theft of mailings from other mailers of DVD movies, video game discs, and other mail matter. We executed a federal search warrant at the employee’s residence and seized more than 5,000 discs valued at approximately $75,765. The employee was removed from the Postal Service, and in March 2007, pled guilty to one count of Theft of Mail. The employee was sentenced to 3 years of probation, 12 months of home detention, and 100 hours of community service.

I understand desperation (certainly don't condone what these folks have done), but stealing mail is a felony. I still can't believe they only get probation...

I kinow UPS used to bait randomly as well. They'd set a box in the truck with a nice watch or something then wait to see if you alerted your supervisor to an open box like that.

The company I work for routinely sees people jeopardizing their jobs by doing stupid stuff like ethics violations to d/l porn on their company owned equipment.

Dumb is as dumb does.
