Arrow Solomon Kane

Quote:
One of the few panels I regret missing during Comic-Con was for Michael Bassett's Solomon Kane, a movie based on the Robert E. Howard character of the same name. I heard some great things about the footage and have been anxious to see more from it. Bloody-Disgusting has debuted a few new photos from Solomon Kane today that feature James Purefoy as the 16th century Puritan warrior. In addition to Purefoy, this also stars Jason Flemyng, Rachel Hurd-Wood, Pete Postlethwaite, and Max von Sydow. These may not be as great as footage, but they definitely look pretty awesome for still shots.

A 16th century Puritan, Solomon Kane is a somber-looking man who wanders the world with no apparent goal other than to vanquish evil in all its forms. His adventures, published mostly in the pulp magazine Weird Tales, often take him from Europe to the jungles of Africa and back. This is being directed by Michael Bassett, who's directorial debut was Deathwatch in 2002 followed by Wilderness in 2006. I believe this was produced independently and doesn't even have a US distributor yet (though I could be mistaken about that). It certainly did come out of nowhere, but I'm excited to see more from it! Hopefully we'll see a trailer soon?

The characters of Robert E Howard have taken a surprisingly long time to get to the screen. Only Conan has really made a splash, and even that character hasn’t had the continual screen presence you might expect. But the independent production Solomon Kane, directed by Michael J Bassett and starring James Purefoy as Kane, could help bring Howard back to theatres. Bassett and Purefoy, along with producer Samuel Hadida, brought Kane to Hall H, where they showed off an exclusive trailer and three long clips from the film.

Solomon Kane is something unusual: a 16th century puritan hero who (in the film) once renounced violence but is brought back to the sword in order to protect a family. James Purefoy’s Kane is dour and violent, but not without humor. One clip we saw showed him traveling with the family he’s protecting, mock dueling with the young son. But soon they come upon a burnt-out village, where we soon learn a witch burning had gone very wrong.

Two other clips were more oriented towards violence. There’s a lot of swordplay in this film, and according to Purefoy and Bassett they went to great lengths to get it right. That involved training (with swordmaster Richard Ryan) but less conventional research like stringing up a pig carcass dressed in leather to see how slashes and stabs really affect a body.

It’s difficult to say how the rest of the cast will work out, but there are some great names: Pete Postlethwaite, Max von Sydow, Alice Krige and Mackenzie Crook are all on hand. But the film looks heavy and brutal; there are some impressive creature designs and a bad guy with a stretched-skin mask who evidently performs the film’s climactic sword fight while set entirely on fire.

The idea is to use this first film to set up a trilogy. Next up would be Kane’s adventures in Africa, and a third film could conceivably bring Kane back to America, where he’d face Native American magic.
Sounds pretty interesting. I hope to see some of this footage soon

Default Solomon Kane movie

Anyone know if this film ever found a U.S. distributor yet? IMDB has it listed as a December release in Russia. I love the character, and really want to see the movie.

Check out the trailer if you've never heard of the character. He was created by Robert E. Howard (author of the Conan the Barbarian books) incidentally. James Purefoy plays Kane. Before you think his look is a ripoff of Van Helsing, it's not. The Kane stories were written in the 20's. Van Helsing used Kane's look. Not the other way around.

I've been following the making of this movie for 2 years. I cannot wait to see it. I've read all of the Solomon Kane stories as a teen. Movie look's very good. If this only get's release as a BD well you can bet this will be my first blind buy on BD

Cool. Someone has heard of him. You should have seen all the idiots on Youtube saying that it was a ripoff of Van Helsing. The Kane stories were originally printed in the 20's.

Well what do you expect from this younger generation that believe nothing was created before 1990 Drive's me nuts when I got a young kid arguing with me that the music in the newest hip hop song wasn't made by a rock group from the 70's

The movie Van Helsing is fun but it as nothing to do with the original Van Helsing character from Dracula IMO
