Default 720 vs 1080

I've never really analyzed studied or looked at a 1080 screen compared to a 780. Where I'm trying to go with this, is I currently own 2 1080 screens. One is a 40 inch Bravia and the other is a 46 inch samsung. But I've decided to build a small home theater. Separate from the main rooms of the home and without any satellite/cable connection. Unfortunately it seems as if my cable provider can only allow me to have HDTV on 2 tv's no more. So while I'm not going to worry about getting a cable connection I plan on just hooking up my new PS3 and xbox 360 to this TV and provide it with a klipsch surround sound.

So my question is if you're only playing Games and watching blu-ray/HD DVD's is there going to be a severe difference between 1080 and 780? I can see the difference with bordcasted HDTV for some reason but I don't see it with games. Mind you there are not a whole of games that run at 1080 to begin with. So what about films?

Thanks.

Oh and sorry this probably should be moved to the home theater section, I would move it myself if I could, mods could you please move it?

are the TVs 1080i or 1080p... if interlaced, the difference should be minimal, if progressive, on a 40" or even 46" set the difference will not be that great IMHO.

1080 is more than twice the pixels of 720, so all else being equal, a 1080 image can be seen in a display bigger 1.5x diagonal

Well I've been watching movies in 1080p, and I'm about to downgrade to 780p. While I watch television at 1080i (My box doesn't have HDMI). I've been around it, and I've been using both 1080i and 1080p and on my PS3 and my xbox 360 Elite, I can't really tell the difference, but like I said the stuff I'm using doesnt' utilize 1080 to begin with so it's difficult to see.

Granted in the near future we may see more 1080 stuff and then maybe then I can see it all but right now I feel content on 780p, and I was wondering if someone could tell me otherwise.

But like I said if I build this room for just gaming and watching movies from time to time, is it safe to save a few hundred bucks? Or should I just go all out and pick up another 1080p television (my third)

It depens on the ratio

TV : viewing distance

Here's a very useful diagram ... most people are sitting too far away to get all of the HD experience
