How can the BD picture from the Theta be better than the Oppo in Source Direct?

Test with both units performed in my no. 1 system and with exact same cables. All video cables are Nordost silverscreen. Audio going through a Cary Cinema 11a to amps. Video going through a Crystalio II VPS-3800 processor and to a Sony VW100 projector which has a new bulb. The units are set to run Source Direct, dvd is sent as 480i, and BD as 1080i or 1080p. Both units are also running the same firmware from Oppo, from Dec 24 last year.

Source Direct is just that - no processing in the player. The fact that this reviewer states there are differences (in the Theta's favor) makes me discard the whole review.

In reading the comments under the review of the Theta - it is an Oppo 83SE with $2000+ in modifications to power and gold plated copper, a thicker chases and some modes in chip layout (i think). The reviewer was using source direct in the review so the processing is done outside of the blu ray machines and the only difference the reviewer is seeing is the $2000 lightness in the pocket book.

I am curious - dose a blu ray player get better with age? The reviewer did reference it more than once. My blu ray player is not a speaker that gets refined with age - usually just creaky and cranky! And I certainly hope that my Oppo waits many years before the creaks set in!

It's amazing how much better you can feel by spending $3000 on a player

Every time I exercise that darn laser, my Oppo looks better and better....guaranteed
