Default 20 year old Amp to replace?

As we are thinking about Getting a new TV, and since meh father thinks the new TV will be used more (probably movies) he wants to replace a 20 year old amplifier , being as this is a technical forum I wanted to ask for suggestions for it.

I think it crackles some (even at low) volume, it along with probably both rooms could be replaced (for better equipment). The current speakers back here are quite large ---- about half the size of about a 5 foot 3(ish) inch person.

Mostly he just wants to replace the amp.

Are you talking about replacing a receiver or an amplifier?

An amp from a company known as "teac", it's never worked with a remote, nor do we have a remote for it I think. http://www.teac.com/consumer_electro...uners/ag-790a/ / http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=...1t:429,r:0,s:0 is I think the closest picture to what we have.

Teac makes receivers, CD players, cassette players, etc. You still haven't answered the question. Do you need an amplifier or a receiver? Do you need it for two-channels or multi-channel surround sound? Do you have any speakers or subwoofer?

An amplifier by itself cannot do anything. It normally does not have a remote or switching between different input/outputs. You need to connect it to a preamp. A receiver, on the other hand, has all the components that you need, such as preamp, amplifier, radio, and audio codec processing. An integrated amp has a preamp and an amplifier without a radio. Most integrated amplifiers are made for two-channel music.

EDIT: The links that you added later indicates that you had a stereo receiver and not an amplifier. You still need to decide whether you want to continue with a two-channel setup or build a multi-channe' surround sound home theater. What kind of speakers do you have?

Two "advent" speakers. This room is "supposedly" for a fireplace (which it does have).

I'll try to get pictures of this room sometime tommorow or soon.
