Default Hype! (1996) (Collector's Edition)

All Seattle music fans should be excited.

Shout!Factory is celebrating the 20th Anniversary of this "Grunge" documentary by releasing it on Blu-Ray for the first time. Obviously some great footage of Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains but also a ton of other great bands of the time. New interviews and a commentary track are included

I have the German blu-ray which is an awful upscale. Hopefully this one will be better - great documentary and good companion piece to the "Decline of Western Civilization" films.

The version of Searching With My Good Eye Closed from the Soundgarden performance in this documentary is amazing. I really wish I could find a bootleg of that show. I believe it was in Calgary.

Any confirmation on the sound mix? I recently found out that a few theatres got DTS 5.1 discs for this when it played theatrically.

Has anyone received this yet? It's supposed to come out today but my Amazon pre-order says "delivery delayed." No for me.
I guess pre-ordering this was completely pointless.

Mine arrived one day after release date. I gave it a cursory glance today. Having had this on VHS and then DVD, this bluray looks great in comparison. Rich color, greatly improved detail etc. Big obvious video improvement over the DVD upon a quick viewing. (I didn't really analyze audio at all vs DVD but it sounded quite good in passing...clearly care was taken in recording this exciting music). Don't hesitate to buy.
Thank you SHOUT!

I’m not into grunge, but I love documentaries about music- particularly ones that go into the cultural and social context around the music. Should I pick this up?

i'm also highly biased having grown up here in San Diego, but this is another excellent music documentary for any fans of indie/alternative rock:

It's Gonna Blow!!!

Synopsis: A film about community, hype, and musical incest. The story of San Diego's legendary 90s music scene and its brief, ill-fated reign as the 'next Seattle'. A motley community of musicians with a do-it-yourself ethos and an aversion to mainstream culture develop their idiosyncratic sounds in the isolation of San Diego, but soon find themselves at the center of bidding wars and expense account lunches. What happens when the outcasts become the next big thing? Drawing from previously unseen performance footage and interviews with over sixty musicians, promoters and artists such as John Reis (Rocket from the Crypt, Drive Like Jehu), Justin Pearson (The Locust, Swing Kids), Rob Crow (Pinback, Heavy Vegetable), Luke Jenner (The Rapture), Pall Jenkins (Three Mile Pilot, Black Heart Procession), Tom Delonge (Blink-182), Mario Rubalcaba (Clikatat Ikatowi, Off!), the film explores the birth of San Diego's innovative post-hardcore scene and its early 90s 'Next Seattle' hype. Featuring interviews and performances from Drive Like Jehu, Rocket from the Crypt, Trumans Water, the Locust, Three Mile Pilot, Heavy Vegetable, Blink 182, Crash Worship, No Knife, Heroin, Antioch Arrow, Boilermaker, Clikatat Ikatowi, Unbroken, Fishwife, Tanner, Physics, Pitchfork, Creedle, Swing Kids, Sub Society, Neighborhood Watch, Inch, Funeral March, Amenity and others. Bonus features include: interview outtakes, rare live footage, flyer gallery, Commentary track featuring Bob Barley (Tit Wrench), Rob Crow (Pinback), Glen Galloway (Trumans Water), Ely Moyal (Trumans Water), O (Fluf), Justin Pearson (The Locust), Matt Reese (Funeral March) and director Bill Perrine

Picked up Soundbreaking. Arrives tomorrow. Sonic Highways looks good too. Probably pick that one up down the road- bit stressed in the wallet at the moment
