PS3 and TrueHD - Blu-ray Forum

Currently I have a Fat PS3 connected to my Pioneer 1018. When I use bitstream on the ps3, the reciever shows that it is decoding DTS. When I play a truehd disc like star trek/dark knight, the reciever shows Dolby, and so does the ps3.

When I change the PS3 to Linear/PCM, the reciever shows PCM, but the PS3 shows Truehd. How can I get it to show TrueHD on the reciever or it doesnt matter, or are my settings wrong.

BTW they are all connected by HDMI.

The fat ps3s can't bitstream hd audio. You want to set it to LPCM and let the ps3 decode the hd audio. Your receiver will then read PCM. The only way to have the receiver say Dolby TrueHD is to bitstream TrueHD to it from a compatible source, like the Slim ps3.

sounds like you have a phat ps3. the above poster is correct. you have to set to lpcm. if the ps3 says truehd, then your hearing truehd. theres really no difference regardless on whats doing the decoding.

Yes. DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD are lossless formats and can only be passed on a "fat" PS3 by using HDMI and selecting the PCM over HDMI setting

And we must all stress, that the fat PS sending lossless audio (dts-HD MA or DolbyTrueHD) as LPCM delivers the same quality as if the receiver was decoding the bitstream. IOW, don't worry that the little DolbyTrueHD or dts-HD MA are not lighting up at your receiver.

In fact when BD was being developed, the companies behind it believed it would be more beneficial to decode the audio to LPCM in the player. This is because the button sounds, secondary audio tracks, etc can all be mixed into LPCM in the player. The fat/slim PS3s are still some of the only devices to do it correctly. Many SA alone players revert to using the lossy codecs when secondary audio is turned on. So the button sounds, commentaries, PIP audio are being mixed on top of the lower quality lossy track. The PS3 can mix the secondary audio tracks onto the lossless tracks.

Is that accurate? I have my fat PS3 set to Bitstream, and it displays DTS on my Onkyo. Just tried it with Toy Story.

Yes. What you are getting when you see that with your "fat" PS3 is the core DTS track. That is the standard "lossy" soundtrack. You must set your "fat" PS3 to PCM, and let it decode the lossless tracks and send it to the receiver as LPCM. If you were getting the lossless track, your Onkyo display would say "DTS HD-MA".

Have you had it set like that for a while? If so I feel bad for you because you've been missing out on HD audio. I think its time for you to revisit your library.

Actually... the lossy output on Blu-ray is less compressed than DD 5.1 and DTS on DVD. So, you might not notice any difference at all doing lossless decoding in your PS3.

No, I only did it to test when I read this thread. My standard setting is LPCM.

Quick question with this issue. I also have a fat PS3 but in order to get the lossless tracks of TrueHD and DTSHD you still need a compatible receiver though correct? that has those decoding abilities even though the PS3 is actually doing the decoding. I'm looking to soon finish up my surround upgrade.
