Default 3D Blu-ray disk on a 2D player?

I have 2 blu-ray players: an Oppo bdp-80 and a Sony s350. I want to get Monster House on blu-ray and was wondering if the new 3D version will play in 2d on these blu-ray players or not???? From what I have read it seems that a 3D BD will indeed play in 2D on a "regular" blu-ray player, but I want to be sure before ordering. Thanks

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it is my understanding that all 3D (active shutter) releases have the 2D version with them as well.

Normally, all 3D blu-ray discs have both 2D and 3D versions on the same disc.

From what I understand, there are 2 video streams on a 3D blu-ray, one the normal stream and the other comprises of addtional frames to create the 3D effect (with the active-shutter glasses), this extra stream only takes 50% of the normal video space compared to the main stream. Both streams combined in the new codec for the 3D output.

So the answer should be yes, 3D blu-ray discs should be compatible with normal 2D blu-ray players. It'll just take the main video stream.

Perhaps someone with better knowledge can correct this if I'm wrong or explain further.

Sounds like that might suck a bit of the guts out of the 2D picture quality.

No, the extra video stream stands on its own. I mentioned 50% size in comparison to the main video stream, not from it. The main stream should be identical to a normal 2D disc.

I'll edit my original post to avoid further musunderstanding.

Thanks for the replies. I was skeptical as to whether it would play or not, but I don't know how the technology works, so wanted to make sure. I'll be getting Monster House, so I'll let you know how I get on!

all except for MvA, which is BD3D only. so you might get menu and so on... but actual 3D content won't play properly w/o 3D gear

I got Monster House 3D yesterday and it plays fine on my 2D player. Just like any other blu-ray. When pressing play on the main menu you are given a choice of 2D or 3D, pressing 3D on a 2D player just displays a message saying you need 3D hardware. Select 2D and it plays as normal. That's it.
