Default Is it worth upgrading to 7.1????

Well like the title says I currently have a 5.1 set up at the moment but my Receiver and a few of my Blu Ray's support 7.1 and I’m trying to decide whether the upgrade is worth it???

any opinions/advice would be great.

Cheers.

ps sorry if ive posted this in the wrong place.

It's a bit more side effects (or rear depending where you add the extra two). I don't find it earth shattering but if you have the room and extra speakers to do it, might as well!

Looking at your room (which is has similar limitations to mine), I say don't bother. Focus on upgrading speakers, TV, components, etc. instead.

For a proper 7.1 setup, you really need room behind your seating area in order to have the correct speaker placement.

You have a couch up against the back wall, so 5.1 is the best option for you (us).

+1.....a properly placed 5.1 set-up will sound better than an improperly placed 7.1 set-up. Upgrading the speakers is a very good idea if you currently have the money to do so, instead of buying new rear surrounds.

There isn't enough 7.1 content to justify the additional two speakers. For the limited 7.1 titles that are available it's worthwhile.

Hell yeah it is worth the upgrade. I flat out went strait to a 7.2 setup And till this day i have never heard another setup like mine in any house. Im not trying to bragg or say there arent any others that sound better than mine because Im sure there are thousands, but it is all or nothing, i am going to go with a 9.4 setup when i get back home. The majority of movies aren't 7.1 yet but they are slowly getting there. But when the whole setup is playing music out of all the speakers it sounds insane but beautiful. I use my setup for 60%movies and 40% music.

If you can and have the space, go for it. But it is not that big of difference where you would listen to 7.1 and feel like you can never enjoy 5.1 again. I'm running a 7.2 system and some movies sound incredible, but many that are 5/5 for audio are 5.1., i.e. Rambo and Kick Ass sound awesome in 7.1, but that doesn't mean Iron Man 2 or either of the Transformers can't compete with it. I agree with the other posts that recommend you upgrade components prior to going 7.1.

Like the posters above, I also have a 7.2 setup and love it. However, as was stated by Hammie and Fors, if your couch is up against the back wall, a properly placed 5.1 setup will work & sound better and still rock your world!

Dont get me wrong im very happy with my 5.1 set up but I was looking and i can add a couple more of my Tannoy satalites for £100 and ive got 7.1 also im going to be moivng in april next year so will prob have more space as well...

i cant really afford to upgrade my speakers and ive just upgraded my TV so this looked like the next step....

If you have 7.1 set up what happens when you watch a 5.1 or 6.1. do you still get sound through the extra speakers?????

If your receiver has a setting for PLIIz it will split the signal going to the surrounds & send it to the rear surrounds for your 7.1 from a 5.1 or 6.1 sound track. This is called Matrixing !
