For the U.S., it is much easier determining the region status by which studio released it. Warner, Paramount and Universal always release everything region-free, so as long they distribute the movie the BD will be playable anywhere. The major studios all have consistent standards in determining what is region-free and what is not for the most part. The trouble comes from the minor distributors, who rarely own global distribution rights to a film. Criterion is often prevented from releasing their Blu-rays as anything but region-locked Blu-rays.
