Default Charmed on Blu-Ray

Hi people!

Does anyone know if there are any plans to produce a Blu-Ray set of the complete Charmed series?
I have the DVD set and I have to say that playing it on a Sony Blu-Ray player supposedly up-scaling on to a 42" high def Panasonic TV it looks a bit rough to say the least; leads me to believe it might not be shot in high enough definition to produce a good BR transfer. Anyone know though?

Charmed is one on the most fun and "sexy" romps that was on TV IMHO. Not to mention that my wife -- who looks, and acts like Piper -- doesn't mind me watching those women kick demon butt!

There aren't many shows like this that my wife doesn't mind me watching!

Blu would be nice!

It was shot on film, so it would look good on Blu-ray, but I believe that like a lot of shows, post-production was done on SD video. So they would have to go back to the original film elements, and even then effects shots may only exist in SD like with Firefly.

Thanks for the info Danielle,

So it seems it would probably cost quite a lot to produce a good Blu-Ray set, that's probably why we don't have one...yet anyway!

I've just put disk one of Season One on again and I was shocked to hear it isn't even 5.1 surround sound - do you/anyone know if it was recorded in a way that would support 5 channels of separate audio?

Maybe the latest boxsets are in surround sound? The one I have is from 2005 (the Amazon Seasons 1-4 box) which at the time cost a whopping £150.00 (Around $300) for just the first four Seasons!!

If anyone can shed any light I'd be really grateful!

To be honest I don't see Charmed coming out on blu before Buffy the Vampire Slayer or even Angel. Not a bad show though. Liked it better with Rose McGowen.

This is funny as I have never watched or followed this show but over the last month or so when I have got up in the morning getting ready for work, I always turn this on as it plays everyday on TBS at the time that I am getting ready. Doesnt look to bad and nice women to look at. I like Shannon Doherty better than Rose McGowan. Allysa Milano is the finest though. Got Em!!

Isn't that upscaled?

Guys, has anyone seen a widescreen version of the show? I was wondering if (like friends) the 4:3 version is actually the cropped version of the movie. I would love to have this in HD and in widescreen

Pretty sure season 3 and onward were shot in widescreen.

What are the odds that this'll get remastered in HD if the reboot gets made? Or that they'll get the rights back for the HSIN cover...

Apparently this show is the second most successful show on Netflix as well (hence the planned reboot). Anyone think that could prompt a full scale restoration alone? I'd love to see this (along with Buffy, & Angel) on blu-ray. The WB/CW used to make great shows.

I was always surprised they never bothered to switch to widescreen in the later seasons, but yes, like Friends, this was shot on film, and can be remastered in widescreen. It'd probably wreck some of the special effect sequences, but it can be done as long as it was filmed with protected borders, which most 90's+ shows were.

Yes, but at the same time, the outer space wasn't always "protected." Buffy (starting with S4) and Friends were shot in widescreen but were intended to be viewed in 4:3. Friends on blu had the issue with stray cameras and mikes and stuff showing up in the scenes, even if it was for a few seconds. And sometimes we could see actors "waiting in the wings" for their cue to come on (Buffy in widescreen has this problem).

Buffy actually started being filmed, as far as we know, in widescreen starting with season 2.

That's why I said "as long as it was filmed with protected borders". If it wasn't carefully protected then it shouldn't be released in 16:9, hell, frankly I'd prefer the 4:3 version anyways. I'm just noting that it was shot on film so it can be remastered in 16:9 if they really wanted to do it since someone asked that awhile ago and they got conflicting responses.

Knowing luck, CBS will completely skip over blu-rays for the new show (if it's made) a la Elementary. Still wondering how the networks/distributors decide which shows deserve (new ones that is, old seasons are riskier of course) blu-ray, and what doesn't.
