How are you outputing the sound? It appears that you have it set up for lpcm and not bitstream, so it wouldn't be outputing dts.

Mine was doing that as well. I was outputting the sound via optical and had it set on linear pcm. switched it to bitstream and everything is working fine. Make sure you have bitstream selected on the which every cable you are using for audio. either hdmi or optical.

Quote:
Multichannel audio is the name for a variety of techniques for expanding and enriching the sound of audio playback by recording additional sound channels that can be reproduced on additional speakers. Surround sound refers to the application of multichannel audio to channels "surrounding" the audience (generally some combination of left surround, right surround, and back surround) as opposed to "screen channels" (center, [front] left, and [front] right).

One of the first documented uses of surround sound was implemented in 1940 for Disney's classic animation, Fantasia. Dubbed 'Fantasound' it consisted of three audio channels which were diffused (panned—initially live by an engineer) around the cinema over up to 54 speakers, which was achieved through the use of the sum and the difference of the phase of sound.

Surround sound technology is used in both cinema and "home theater" systems, games consoles and PCs (For example, Battle Gear 4 Tuned from TAITO used 5.1 channel surround sound system)[1],and a growing number of other applications.

Consumer surround sound formats include sound on videocassettes, Video DVDs, and HDTV broadcasts encoded as Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Digital, or DTS. Other formats include the competing DVD-Audio (DVD-A) and Super Audio CD (SACD) formats; and MP3 Surround.

Theatrical film 5.1 surround formats include Dolby Digital, DTS, and Sony Dynamic Digital Sound (SDDS).

Surround sound hardware is mostly used by movie productions and sophisticated video games. However, some consumer camcorders have surround sound capability either built-in or available as an add-on. Some consumer electronic devices (AV receivers, stereos, and computer soundcards) have digital signal processors or digital audio processors built into them to simulate surround sound from stereo sources
Perhaps this will answer your question. I apologize i didn't notice that you had said DTS Multichannel in your original post.

If you are using HDMI you should set it for LPCM, as the PS3 cannot bitstream High-Def audio sources.

This is correct. If you keep the PS3 set to LPCM then you will always get the best possible sound experience available on your Blu-ray. The receiver will always register it as Multichannel because the PS3 is sending the signal as PCM.

Multchannel = Uncompressed LPCM

For optical cable, select bitstream.

Optical can't carry high bandwidth multi-channel PCM. It will be downmixed to 2 channel only. That's why PLII shows up.

If you're using optical connection, you HAVE to set the PS3 to output bitstream to get the proper 5.1. The disadvantage is you'll only hear the core DTS and Dolby only. The problem will remain with Uncompressed PCM audio (like in POTC) though, you'll still get 2-channel only.

To get the full HD experience (except for DTS-HD MA), you MUST use HDMI connection, and set PS3 output as PCM.

5.1 is multiple channels, dts multichannel is your receivers way of saying 5.1 .

when it is 2 channel it says stereo, when its 5.1 or more it will say multichannel

so i have set my ps3 to bitstream and last night during Pearl Harbor(bluray) during two parts of the movie I heard NO vocals from people talking but music!!!

The one part when the sailor is telling the sleeping sailors that "we're being bombed, we're being bombed" all i saw was his lips move, no sound!

And the other part where Ben and Josh were lying on the ground in thatplane depot trying to get into planes, and Ben was giving orders.. NO vocals, I just saw his lips move!!!!

And reasons why this is? Kind of annoying...

when you switch to optical and select bitstream, it tells you that you may not hear everything. what you need to do is go back to your audio settings and manually select what your receiver can handle. i suggest only selecting dd and dts 5.1 first and try it out.

and just forget about all the PCM stuff that it asks about(reffering to ps3)? That makes sense man... Let me know my question and I'll also try out what the last two posts said and let you know

Thanks guys

I was reading this the other day so I decided to check my settings. Here's what I found

Optical audio out, PS3 set to bitstream, PS3 displays the DTS multichannel tag, and receiver lights up DTS and 5.1.

Optical audio out, PS3 set to linear PCM, PS3 displays 5.1, receiver lights up DTS (I think) but only stereo.

Sounds to me like the PS3 should only be displaying multichannel and not 5.1 for DTSHD-MA tracks in order to get 5.1 through your receiver using an optical audio cable.
