Red face Thinking of getting her a................

Kindle Wi-Fi, 3G for LeAnn for Christmas. She reads a ton. She buys books new or used. I think this would be a perfect gift for her. She has books all over the place which makes me upset. What do you guys think those who have one?

Any tips, pros, or cons? Cases? White or Black?

I don't need to surprise her so don't ask, she already knows.

I would rather advise you to buy the furniture (the thing you keep your books in, dont know the english name) rather than that electronic item.

Old style gifts are always more classy.

She has 3 or 4 bookcases that are full. It makes the house cluttered.

I have had a Kindle since last Christmas and it's well worth it. I literally have had over 50 books this year, 45+ of which were free. Amazon is always changing the free ones every month which is awesome.

I got the basic leather case from Amazon which actually holds the Kindle in place inside so it doesn't fall out.

Just get her one with plenty of memory and a case/cover that matches what the woman likes. My mother has one and she loves it, makes it easier to read pretty much anywhere.

She doesn't have U-Haul boxes full of paperbacks does she?

I should really have a garage sale one day.

Yeah most are paperbacks, and she buys them from the flea market.

Not when the Kindle is so easy to use, has such a long-lasting battery and you can get a lot of books for under $5.

Visit Apple.com and check out the iPad. The books may be cheaper on the Kindle, but the battery on the iPad lasts about 10 hours.

Battery life on a Kindle is supposedly at least 3 weeks between charges, much longer than 10 hours.

For the last time AMAZON gives away books for FREE every month. The list always rotates and there are always hundreds of free books that are classic.

Plus who wants to read for an hour (or more) staring at a bright LCD/LED screen? That will seriously blind you over time.

I have a Gen1 one and would recommend it. Although I personally am not much of a reader, I find myself picking it up because it's cool to mess around with.

My wife is an avid reader as well. I bought her the Kindle DX for Christmas maybe two years ago. Anyway, once she got her hands on my iPad, she instantly wanted that instead. To her it made much more sense. She has her Kindle app, so she did not lose out on any of her past purchases.

Additionally, I have re-kindled my love for reading. I use the Apple iBooks app mostly, but I also have the Kindle app, Nook app, and Borders app. I price shop or get the books I want when they may not be available on my "preferred" app.

I also can buy or rent textbooks through the CourseSmart app for my classes that I am taking, which helps on lugging text books around. Finally, I have tons of Cisco and Juniper PDF files and textbooks on my iPad as well. There are note taking apps that you can get and when paired with the Apple bluetooth keyboard, it makes taking notes in meetings a piece of cake, especially when you see other people waiting for their laptops to boot up and then their word processing programs to open.

My wife has not replaced many of her books because she finds it difficult to double dip, but her favorites that she has re-read until the pages have fallen out have been double dipped.

Some of her biggest reasons for wanting the iPad over the Kindle were:

- Better night time reading experience with the back lit screen (brightness can be adjusted as well as Sepia background for easier on the eyes experience)
- E-mail is right there
- Facebook is right there
- Calendar is right there
- Internet is right there

We got the 3G versions and will not get keeping our iPhones because we never use them. This will alleviate one data plan out of our monthly bills.

I guess what I am saying is that the Kindle app is great as a book reader tied to a specific book distribution company, i.e., Amazon. the iPad builds on that and allows you to use ANY of the companies out there as well as give you access to MUCH more stuff that has become common in our every day lives, i.e., e-mail, scheduling, Internet browsing.

Either way you go, you will not be disappointed. Just make sure the way you go is what you want for the long term.

Good luck!

iPad, you need a contract right?

I'd love to get her an iPad, but it's a little more expensive. The most important thing is that she doesn't have wi-fi around unless she's at school, but she won't have time to read because she'll be busy being an adviser soon.

Since we both have iPhones, we can check our mail from anywhere.

I'm pretty sure that there are no contracts with the iPad's 3G service. It's a pay-as-you-go plan.
