United Kingdom Longlegs (2024)

I don't see a thread for the Blu-ray. I think I'm getting the mediabook from Germany but I do like the UK artwork for the Blu-ray.

Another excellent film from Perkins.

Not seen it yet so will probably avoid this thread for spoilers for the time being, but I will say I find them only releasing the 4K in a steelbook for £20 more than the BD pretty disgusting. Is the assumption that if people are willing to pay more for 4K they will simply have no problem paying even more for a steelbook on top?

I'm not wedded to 4K yet, but I did recently decide that I will start buying 4K/BD duo releases more often from now on. But then this film comes out and I'm supposed to pay an extra tenner for a bit of tin? What nonsense. I just want to see the film so I bought the BD.

I feel sorry for people fully on board the 4K train who either have to shell out now or wait for an unspecified time for the standard 4K to inevitably come out. In the mean time I can only assume a lot of UK based folks have simply imported cheaper alternatives from elsewhere. What a dumb decision from "Black Bear".

I just bought the standard blu-ray. I liked Longlegs but 4K wouldn’t have added anything for me personally.

I’m not making a habit of forking out for blind buys on 4K and I’ve upgraded too many DVDs and blu-ray steelbooks for that to be any kind of incentive.

If studios keep shortchanging U.K. buyers I’ll just do what everyone else does and stream films.

I loved the film it felt like something new to me as all of Perkins's films have.

Perfect? No, but so much better than 90% of the garbage that's released.

I've had a great year:

Longlegs
Cuckoo
Tous les dieux du ciel
The Substance
Benediction
Firebrand
Kinds of Kindness
MaXXXine
Pandemonium

All independent minded.

Not seen a single film this year from a 'big' studio that even comes close to any of those. Yet to watch Joker 2 not expecting them to capture that little bit of magic from the first. We'll see.

Big studios are great for small minds.

And Time Addicts was great.

There has been some great big studio content released on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray this year but it's been 20 to 30 year old films and mostly released by boutique labels.

Remaking Joker and Dune (again) isn't much of a risk.

I went into this not fully aware of who Oz Perkins was. The name did sound familiar, but I wasn't paying much attention to it. I also forgot that Cage was in it, and I didn't even recognize him at first. Watching the film I thought to myself "this reminds me of The Blackcoat's Daughter a bit", and what do you know, it's the same guy!

Unfortunately, this didn't really do it for me, but neither did The Blackcoat's Daughter, so his fans will probably like it quite a bit more.

So I watched it last night. Thoughts below (contains spoilers!):

[Show spoiler]How you managed to avoid knowing he was in it is pretty wild! I definitely agree with you regarding expectations. I think the singing parts were the only real Nic Cagey bits in it though. Beyond that you wouldn't know it was him.

The opening scene really shit me up It's become a bit of a cliche to bemoan jump-scares, but they can be done well. I think it was actually necessary for them to open the film like that though as the scares are so effective that they reverberate and linger, continuing to hover over some of the following scenes that on their surface aren't particularly frightening. That opening really does force you in to a headspace whereby you're on edge even when all you're watching is standard police procedural scenes. Really well done.

I'll echo what seems to be the common consensus among detractors that the second half maybe doesn't quite live up to the first. The overt supernatural stuff is slightly jarring. It would have been more satisfying if it was more open-ended, if they'd somehow managed to leave us questioning whether there really was a genuine satanic element at play. But it wasn't enough to completely derail it for me. I suppose it might also be seen as a bit of a cliche to have the mother turn out to be the big bad and that of course our protagonist had a connection to Longlegs from the beginning, but again, not enough for me to dismiss the film out of hand.

I think my only real gripe was those MacGuffin balls inside the dolls heads. Not sure I grasped 100% of what they were doing, but they did feel a bit cheap somehow. I'm sure I'll pick up fully on what they were on a rewatch. Would have been cooler if they were actual porcelain crafted brains or something rather than just black balls. Would have felt less gimmicky.

I also think they should have completely saved the full face reveal of Longlegs for the interrogation scene. Finally getting to see him and then within 5 minutes he's killing himself would have been chefs kiss.

Oh, and I was kind of hoping he might actually have longer than average legs or something I might have missed it, but I didn't pick up on why he actually called himself that. Again though, I'm more than happy to wait for a rewatch to find out if I did miss a reference rather than have it explained to me now.

Overall though, loved how it was made and shot.

I wanted to see Blackcoat's Daughter back when it came out but a satisfactory release never materialised for me. I'm Region B only (if I went Region Free I'd only end up importing copious amounts so I'm sticking to Region B as a self-deterrent to excess ) and the American release is locked to Region A. I know I could get the German or French ones but I want a copy with English writing (another self imposed rule of mine to stop me importing too much!). There is an Australian version out there somewhere (with the alternative title 'February') but as of yet I've not encountered an affordable copy. Maybe it will get a UK release at some point owing to the success of Longlegs.

Looking forward to Cuckoo. I thought Luz was phenomenal so excited to see if the filmmaker can build on that. I really disliked Revenge, however I'll be checking out The Substance despite that. Not seen Kinds of Kindness yet. I'm sure I'll get round to it in the coming years, but I've slightly gone off Lanthimos since he made the switch to English and became (dare I say it) slightly more mainstream. I think it's kind of shame that he's abandoned making Greek productions but I guess it was inevitable. I found MaXXXine (which I watched the night before last) to be a bit disappointing to be honest. Started off well enough, but by the end it felt like the paint was running thin. Was always going to be difficult to keep the momentum of the series going, especially with such a short turnaround between the films, but there you go. Pandemonium is on my shelf waiting to be watched. Not familiar with the others you mentioned apart from Firebrand. You mentioned in the thread that you thought it was historically accurate but I could have sworn I'd read somewhere that it wasn't. Could be wrong though! As for Joker 2, at this point I'm just fascinated to see if it's as bad as people are making out.

I do that with anything I'm looking forward to see it's not easy sometimes. I never knew Lady Gaga was in Joker 2 until I seen a ****ing billboard in London last weekend. D'oh. It's a game I've always played. I did sneak a look at the Cuckoo trailer for 30secs and it made me giggle I know I was going to get a batshit crazy film

Back to Longlegs, I'm pretty damn sure Perkins didn't want us to know about him too until we really had to and most of the posters don't really show his image. I'm glad I didn't know.

I'm a big fan of The Blackcoat's Daughter (AKA February) and I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House I seen both I think on Netflix randomly and loved them.

I don't really call these 3 films 'horror' but if they are then I like horror films.

I think Perkins's Gretel & Hansel is closer to what I call horror and I loved that too I have the Germany mediabook. Shout! have a release too and Brian Orndorf reviewed it https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Grete...356838/#Review but didn't like it, alas.

Perkins has redone Stephen King's The Monkey (Romero's was very poor) and that's my next treat hopefully. I don't think Perkins would go near it if he thought he didn't have something new. I'll not look at a single other thing now about the film until I sit down to watch it.

February (The Blackcoat's Daughter) is cheap on Amazon or eBay and if you don't mind the German title it's only €7.93 + postage at Amazon.de or Rarwaves for £12.86 https://www.rarewaves.com/products/4...-german-import

I did like The Substance a lot (it perhaps borrows too much from other films, but it's enjoyable), and what I remember of MaXXXine was fine as well (I slept through some parts of it, so I'll need to watch it again), but my favourite cinema experiences of 2024 so far were Alien: Romulus, and Immaculate. Well, I enjoyed The Zone of interest, and especially All of Us Strangers even more, but those are technically 2023 films.

Since when was there a standard 4K release of Longlegs?

I bought the blu-ray because I didn't want the 4K steelbook, and now I see a regular version on HMV. ****ing typical.

Also, I echo the praise for Strange Darling in this thread. My movie of the year, immediately in my top five of all time and a no-brainer for the limited edition 4K set (I rarely buy 4K but this deserves it!)

I actually watched this (Cuckoo) last night shortly after our chat funnily enough!

I liked it a lot. Some good scares. As is often the case with me, I got a bit lost with the intricacies of the plot at one point but I got the gist in the end.

As I speculated elsewhere on the forum, it definitely had more of an arthouse sensibility to it than the generic image used for the bluray cover would perhaps lead general audiences to believe, but I expected that having seen Luz. It's definitely more esoteric than Cuckoo, but I'd recommend seeking it out if you can. Altered Innocence did a region-free BD a couple of years ago. Few copies usually kicking about on ebay but you could get it from Film Treasures too if you weren't bothered about paying extra for the LE slipcase.

That is ****ing infuriating.

Obviously I knew there would be one eventually, but like CJPowers I refused to pay £10 extra for a tin case on release day so just bought the BD. If I'm committing myself to paying more for a 4K already don't assume I want to pay even more on top of that for a steelbook.

If they want people to start buying 4K discs this surely isn't the tactic to go for. Making people wait an extra month is surely bad business. Then you have people who bought the BD feeling resentful about potentially double-dipping.

I get Limited Edition releases come first and I know some people get frustrated having to wait for standards in those instances, but when it's literally just packaging that really grates. There was no supplementary material to make it worth buying. No book, no exclusive bonus features. Just the tin. **** that. And **** Black Bear.
