I wouldn't consider the Dark Cinema II boxset "big." It's 3 films that sells for $30-35 regularly, and currently $25 on Kino's own store.

I just meant that Sirk collectors have to buy two unrelated titles to get it. I would have bought it if it were standalone, since DVD Beaver says it has marginally improved image quality over the French disc, but because it was part of that boxset, I skipped it.

Oh, fab! These are definitely worth getting if you like melodrama or Sirk’s more well-known films.
Now if Kino could also release Has Anybody Seen My Gal?... |

For those who don't know them, All I Desire is a period piece about a woman who abandoned her husband and children years ago, to follow her dream of being a star on stage. It never happened, and as the movie opens she's struggling to survive in cheap vaudeville. She soon returns home for the first time, for her daughter's stage debut in a high school play. On arriving, she lies and tells the family she's a huge success. Drama ensues. The film is largely brilliant, but suffered from serious studio meddling that neuters the final third. There's Always Tomorrow is contemporary, a fascinating reunion of Double Indemnity. Stanwyck is the "one that got away," the love of Fred MacMurray's life. As the film opens he's married and settled with kids, when Stanwyck, now a successful New York designer, returns to LA and causes stirrings in his heart. It feels like the kind of dark, honest, realistic film Sirk was allowed to make after a few hits. It's one of my favorites of his. Last edited by James Luckard; 05-28-2020 at 12:33 AM. |

All I Desire is so underrated (perhaps not to the same extent as Have You Seen My Gal). I believe it was a B feature as well, correct me if I'm wrong.
The film has some of the richest subtext you'll ever find. Stanwyck of course is brilliant, yet perhaps diverting to much attention away from Carlson's performance. Who is of course cast as an academic type, but he's given far more depth of character to work with. He excels with the strength of the material given on conflict with the rigidity of convention, and community expectations of those in certain position to abide even more by them. Bringing I think nuances that weren't written for his character. So aye, just watch it if you haven't seen it. |

Come to think of it @Ilenewoodsfan99 Many Douglas sirk films are a warning not to have children. Written on the wind- major warning! All that heaven allows deals w children causing trouble for Jane Wyman's character (been a while since I've seen it- lol)

I love There's always tomorrow! Not only rich with subtext but another great pairing of MacMurray and Stanwyck!

Definitely those first two. There's Always Tomorrow is minor when it comes to those two and that warning.

I’m very surprised some people here consider these “lesser Sirk”. Compared to what? His 3 best films? Sirk made lots of great films and some less than great but still solid, both in the US and in his native Germany.

Speaking for myself, I think what we mean is simply "less well known." I actually like There's Always Tomorrow more than some of his more famous films.
