I got both and prefer the ES. I dont use my ps3 but for gaming these days. I think I will always keep a dedicated player and a ps3.

after doing a little a/b demoing i think i do prefer the es also...seems to have more depth and from what i can tell is sharper overall...im sure id never notice the difference on my tvs but at 120" the difference is there...i guess ill get rid of the other ps3

I admit I do not have a PS3. However I do have an Oppo 83 and will say that for blu-ray, the 1000ES is a better player. So much so that I have relegated the 83 as a back-up to the ES. Why? Two primary reasons: (1) the Sony has played every disc I have thrown at it. ''Patton'' for example does not look like a postage stamp in the upper corner of the screen (a known ''bug'' of the Oppo).
(2) The picture simply looks better. As mentioned above, there is greater detail and a sharper picture from the Sony in terms of blu-ray. For standard DVD's I would pick the Oppo. However, as they say; YMMV!

I cannot comment much on the PS3, as I am not a gaming person and do not own one. But I have been using my Sony BDP-S1000ES since I picked it up on closeout sale at Best Buy a few months ago and replaced my S550 with it as my primary player. It has been absolutely terrific and I am quite pleased. And for under $90 with a 5 year warranty . . how can you go wrong? Of course if you care about having streaming or 3D, this is not the player for you as those capabilities do not and probably never will exist in the S1000ES. The S570 is a good model to consider if those features are important to you. But for playing blu-rays with pristine quality plus wi-fi - the S1000ES is a great player.
