Default PS3 for non-gamers?

I need player advice--And I could go into a long and cringingly painful history about why I have deep-seated hostilities against PS3 gamer-boiz who came into Blu thru gaming rather than vice versa.
(Let's just say that back before Sony got its Blu act together, we had one aspiring PS3 would-be volunteer viral-marketing "Sony-scout" crossposting from the game groups, who within a month had our entire DVD group united as one and singing the praises of early HD, just to P*SS THE GUY OFF!!!! )

Therefore, I would like all the hardcore PS3 gamerz, who wish to convert me to rooling games of GTA 4 and Guitar Hero to now leave the room. Baliff, please clear the court.
<file out>
I hope I am now addressing the "purist" home-theater fans on the board, who live only for the right DVD format and the highest aggregate of tech specs:

Question: I'd like to get a player by the all-important Christmas sales--
But as the third-generation players are announced, I see one here that doesn't have 1.1 yet, one there that can't upconvert, another one that doesn't have all the newest audio codecs, one that can't switch 4:3, etc...
And the one that does continually live up to specs, and has innards most likely to firmware up to Pirates-playable BD-J is...(oh, cripes)...PS3.
(Darn...WHY did it have that one?)

All right. That does it. Speaking from purely a home-theater aspect (as I am well past the game demographic, have neither the time, inclination or clue needed to play Guitar Hero, am thoroughly confused by "spinning" games, and haven't played any PlayStation since they had that Mac patch for Final Fantasy VII), is it worth just buying a PS3 as Blu movie player alone over all the other standalones?
Or should I wait and play Profile 2.0 Roulette with whichever company brings the minimum standards out first in an affordable player, even if it takes till Summer/Fall '08?

I've never been a gamer, never had a PS anything, and my last game system was a nintendo 64... but dude, your attitude is, shall we say, offensive... you truly need to clear up your case of cranial-rectal inversion.

You have fallen into the "trap" of pidgeon-holing the PS3 as Game system - with the added benefit of the addition of a blue ray player. You couldn't BE more wrong (as Chandler Bing would say)

The PS3 is NOT a game system that happens to play BD, it is a solid piece of home media center engineering, that not only plays BD, plays your music, runs slideshows (even using the SD or CF cards direct from your camera) surfs the net in 1080p, runs streaming media (stills, audio, and video) wirelessly from a media server on your home network (try TVersity), plays MP4 files in beautiful HD (an hour long HD TV show is about 700M), allows you a simple plug and play upgrade for the hard drive without voiding the warrantee (using an off the shelf laptop drive), allows you to load linux as a second operating system, is infinitely upgradable through firmware (one click, and it downloads and installs its own updates), will eventually have DVR capabilities (coming to europe first) lets you hook up external USB drives for additional storage (if you don't want to upgrade the internal hard drive)... oh, and by the way, it plays games.

Get over your prejudices, if you get one, and actually do more with it than simply pop in pirates, or play guitar hero, you will understand why so many PS3 zealots want to spread the "good news"

If however, you are locked into the eleteist mindset that it is only a gaming system, and nothing more, feel free to get a stand alone and only use it for movies... but remember, a VERY large part of the success of BD can be laid at the feet of a humble little gaming system.

Thats my $.02

Edit:
GT4 and Guitar Hero? Before you slam the games, try games that were actually written to take advantage of the cell processor... try GT-HD, Resistance - Fall of Man, Oblivion or Heavenly Sword...

One other thing, through the "folding at home" project, the PS3 is even contributing to finding a cure for cancer! What more could you ask for in a simple little "gaming system"?

Before it gets more into detailed...

Its True you dont wanna play games, thats cool but in terms of Blu-ray disc i have the PS3 first for gaming and now... have more movies than games (3 games and 10 movies)

The PS3 does almost (read again) almost all good things but lack of something, that is "Analog Outputs" yes, it can run Movies, yes you can play games, yes you can browse the Web, yes you can do "Folding at Home", yes you can do almost everything and besides it may be the most advance system right now in the world for consumers, but you're just into movies...

I suggest you getting a Stand Alone player cause it has Analog Outputs so it does the Audio Decoding Inside and you can have the best Sound Possible without getting a new AV Receiver that decodes it for you... if it decodes it and put it in Analog it will be compatible with your old receiver (like mine)

Abount the profile 1.1 and stuff dont worry all of those electronic equipments are gonna be upgradable thru a firmware update, my personal opinion...

P.D. The PS3 its maybe the lowest cost Blu player out there...

I am a gamer. I owned PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP, Nintendo DS, Gameboy Colour, Gameboy Light.

I got PS3 NOT BECAUSE I want to play games, but to PLAY BD movies. Imagine, what game I can play at the moment? none.

Well, that might change with the release of Kingdom Hearts III, Final Fantasy XIII, or Tekken 6, but the main reason I got PS3 as of now is to taste BD.

yep for those people at my store looking into bd i ussually recommend the ps3 if i can tell that their anywhere technical people.

The ability to network etc, download, use videos of other places, pictures, mp3 music etc. basically a home media pc they like. Also the fact that the ps3 out of all the players is the only one likey to be future profile's compliant.

for those who say they want it and at the same time are like whats 1080p mean? i thought HD was HD.. yeah they ussually get the standalone incase they wouldnt know how to work the touch-eject button on the ps3.

Side bar:

So many people with so much money tied up in games and movies yet us Americans are always crying about not having enough money set aside for the day we need to retire.

LOFL

Our priorities are so screwed up.

Well, not mine. I own 2 games and 0 movies but my self funded Roth-IRA, SEP and 401K is rolling along nicely at 40 y.o..
