Just found My Neighbours the Yamadas up for preorder too - same date as Laputa. I'm going to be so poor this Christmas...

Updated specs:
Blu-ray page

Includes the edited US version (which is where the English DD 5.1 track comes into play).

Sounds strange that they would include a cut down US version in their original japanese version. Aren´t they against exports bigtime?

Very cool though that this is coming up so soon anyways

It isn't really cut. There were several changes made to the audio. You can see what they were below (may contain spoilers read at your own risk):

[Show spoiler]
Quote:
Although the plot and much of the script was left intact, Disney's English dub of Laputa: Castle in the Sky contains some changes. These differences do not appear in the original dub.

* A significant quantity of background chatter and one-liners were added (even more so than in Disney's dub of Kiki's Delivery Service), filling in moments of silence and increasing the frenetic effect of certain scenes.
* Composer Joe Hisaishi was commissioned to rework and extend his original synthesizer-composed 37-minute soundtrack into a 90-minute piece for symphony orchestra in an effort to make the film more accessible to US audiences who are accustomed to a more substantial musical accompaniment.
* Pazu and Sheeta, as portrayed by James Van Der Beek and Anna Paquin, are made to sound as several years older, placing them in their mid-teens, rather than their pre-teens.
* Several modifications were made to dialogue spoken to/about Sheeta by members of the Dola gang, including a declaration of love from one of the pirates. In the original Japanese version, the dialogue presented Sheeta as a potential mother figure for the pirates, instead of a potential romantic interest.
* References to Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island were removed, as was the reference to Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels.

Although all these alterations were approved by Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki, there have been a number of critics who called them into question. On the other hand, Miyazaki himself is said to have approved of Hisaishi's reworking;[8] his compliments were echoed by several reviewers.[9][10][11]

YES! I was scared that Ghibli would be releasing their old titles only once per year but this is great news! Bring on Totoro!

I'm thrilled beyond words that LAPUTA is being released so soon after NAUSICAA. I have very high hopes for this BD, the NAUSICAA transfer was virtually flawless.

I love this movie, but it's really pricey, especially the Japanese yen has appreciated a lot recently.

Great news!! Though this is not my fav Miyazaki's, this is still a welcome news nonetheless. Perhaps epics like Princess Mononoke will come to blu sooner than later?

It looks like they're releasing Miyazaki's films in chronological order. So after this we still have Totoro, Kiki, and Porco Rosso to go. I'm guessing we will see Mononoke Hime in 2012.

This is how I think they will release them:

OPTION 1

July 2011 - Totoro & Grave of the Fireflies
December 2011 - Kiki's Delivery Service & Whisper of the Heart
July 2012 - Porco Rosso & Spirited Away
December 2012 - Princess Mononoke & Howl's Moving Castle.

OPTION 2:

July 2011 - Totoro & Grave of the Fireflies
December 2011 - Kiki's Delivery Service & Whisper of the Heart
July 2012 - Porco Rosso & Pompoko (?)
December 2012 - Princess Mononoke & Only Yesterday (?)
July 2013 - Spirited Away & ? (maybe Earthsea)
December 2013 - Howl's Moving Castle & ? (maybe Cat Returns)
Someday... Ocean Waves

Are they ever planning to release US versions of these? Or at least import them in decent quanities? I would pay good money for Ghibli movies, especially Castle in the Sky, Howl's Moving Castle and Nausicaa, but not $90 per.

Yesterday I started watching my standard dvd copy of Laputa, the 2010 special edition version that was released alongside Ponyo in February in the U.S., and I'm not sure but I was going back and forth between the English and Japanese tracks trying to hear the differences in the soundtracks. An above poster says Joe Hisaishi created more orchestral music for the US version but to me the Japanese version (at least on this dvd edition) sounds like it has the exact same music throughout?

The 2010 US DVD doesn't have the extra music on the English dub track. The 2003 US DVD did have it though. Here's a link to the old version:
