Default Blu-ray/DVD Combos

Why are they still doing this? Wasn't the flipper discs and combos a major problem with the HD-DVD format?

If Blu-ray wants to be the only kid on the block by replacing DVD as the new format, why do they continue to offer both? Some even have Blu-ray/DVD/Digital download. ugh!

Many films are offered as Blu-ray only. i wish they would all be liie this. Do people really need both? I understand they may want to pop a Kids movie in the mini-van for the little ones, so I can see why Disney is especially fond of it.

I'm guessing there will be a point when all of these multi-format titles will be re-released as Blu-ray only.

Thoughts, opinions?

Thanks all

Cause not many people own Blu ray players compared to dvd? I find it better. Just release one version with both. People can own it on dvd and when it comes to that time where they can upgrade, they already have the blu.

Most of the BD/DVD combos are separate discs (though Universal & Summit have tried BD/DVD flippers); virtually all SD/HD DVD combos were flippers, which caused the compatibility issues.

BD/DVD combos are mainly because BD doesn't have anywhere near the penetration outside the "mancave" (kids' rooms, master bedroom, car, portable players, etc.) that DVD does; you can use the BD with your home theater and the DVD on long trips.

I've got a bunch of the flipper discs and I haven't had an issue with any of them as of yet.

Same here. I have owned quite a few flipper DVDs and I have never had a problem with them either.

My parents don't have Blu-ray, and probably won't for a long time. I think its nice when I buy a movie I can send the DVD their way... I don't understand why its such a HUGE deal to a lot of people. If you don't want the DVD version, don't buy it. WB and Sony and Disney all offer options now, the only one I can think of that doesn't is Fox. And many times the Fox version with the DVD is exclusive to one store. If your movie comes with a DVD, if you don't want it, give it away, or buy the version that doesn't come with one...

Maybe because they don't really offer an option 90% of the time and when they do, they tend to drop the extras disc. Iron Man 2 anyone?

I'm all up for offering these double or triple packs but also give me a chance to buy only the blu-ray version for $5 less.

The Fighter (eg) could be $19,99 for the triple pack and $15,99 for the BD only or $39,99/$29,99MSP. I'm sure everyone would be happy.

Yeah, I've got a similar situation, my parents have a winter home in Arizona, and the guest house there only has a small TV/DVD combo. Because of this I've taken all the DVDs I get with Blu-rays down there and let them have them for people to watch in their guest house.

I like the fact that there is a DVD in with the Blu-Ray for this very reason. My parents still have a CRT TV (Standard Def even!) and have neither the disposable income nor the need or desire to get rid of it and buy an HDTV. So Blu-Ray to them is worthless.

I let my fiancée parents borrow my DVD copy many times. Or I let her brother borrow the DVD if he wants to take it over a friends house or something. I never understand the hate for them. They don't increse the price and if there is a combo pack that cost more then there is a single disc Blu for you to buy. Too many people on this forum think that of it's useless to them the it must be useless for everyone else.

Not really. But I think that's the case with the majority. After all, this is a Blu-ray forum. Personally, I have absolutely no need for DVD. However, I don't care if it's included in a combo pack or anything. Just like the DC...useless for me, but I don't care if it's there.

I like it when they put an extra Dvd in. For one thing my Blu-ray player is in my room. So it's nice to have an extra copy of the movie that I can watch in my living room. Also I can use the extra Dvd copy on my computers and when I go to other peoples houses and so on.

I think its a good move on the studios part. It helps with the transition from DVD to Bluray. They probably have some people thinking, I'll be getting a bluray player later so instead of just buying the DVD I'll get this combo pack.
Also It makes me feel like I'm getting more for my money. No I don't really use the DVD myself, but if my kid wants to watch a movie in his room with no bluray player, atleast we are not double dipping.
And lastly, the packaging is great. (except for maybe the flippers) I have no issues with the way they package them together.
Years down the line we may see the end of DVDs, but I'm sure that is a few decades away and I'm not going to waste my time thinking about that. I'm happy with Blu Ray and Dread the Day we see a new format that makes us want to buy our collection all over again. At that time I think I'll refuse to make that leap and there will be someone like the guy that started this forum saying Why is Blu Ray still Around, Do people really use this?

I only have one BD player...if I want to watch a movie in the bedroom the DVD comes in handy. Or you could be a nice guy and let friends/family borrow it or give it away. And if that doesn't make you happy throw it on eBay for a few bucks...

You might b**** about the free DVD in some Blu-Ray packages nowadays, but I can assure you that my dad/girlfriend/friends don't.

DVD is so cheap nowadays if they offered a Blu Ray only version for many titles it wouldn't be much cheaper. The people who should be upset are the people who pay $15.99 for just the DVD version.

Blu-ray + DVD together sells better -> cheaper price.
Blu-ray only -> relatively high price.

Oh that would be everyone in Scandinavia and also here in Finland. Want to rent a movie? 4.5 euros a day for DVD.
