Default Rushmore

If anyone tries to watch the movie on a PS3, it sucks. There's black bars around the top AND bottom, making a 50" TV display at like 20". Sucks. Rushmore is my all-time favorite movie. Any idea when this is coming out?

LOL, you realize when it comes out on blu-ray, it's still gonna have black bars on top and bottom, right? It was shot with anamorphic lenses, so it's aspect ratio is 2.40:1 (wider than your TV set). This is why there are black bars on the top and bottom, so they can fit the whole image on your TV with severely cropping it.

Trust me, this is a good thing.

And no, unfortunately there is no release date yet.

The Disney/Criterion deal that allowed "Rushmore", "The Royal Tenenbaums" and "The Life Aquatic" to come out as Criterion-branded/Disney-distributed discs doesn't seem to have survived into the Blu-ray era.

"Chasing Amy", "The Rock" and "Armageddon" were also part of this arrangement and they all wound up on Blu-ray as non-Criterions without the Criterion supplements.

On the other hand, the fact that we're still waiting on the 3 Wes Anderson movies from Disney may suggest that he's trying to work something out to keep them in the Criterion Collection. He obviously wants his movies released with the Criterion banner so I can't imagine him letting them to be downgraded in that regard when they hit Blu.

Hopefully he has some say in the matter because Disney would probably be happy to just dump them onto Blu-ray with HD transfers and no extras.

Had to chime in here, I LOVE Rushmore! and Waiting on Royal Tenenbaums too. Gene Hackman and Bill Murray are priceless. I picked up Bottle Rocket a few weeks ago for $20.

This kind of subtler comedy is the best, mostly tongue-n-cheek, when you're not laughing out loud.
