Default PS3 will play BR/Games but, NOT DVDs??

Anyone hear about this?? I have the "fat" model PS3 and a few weeks ago, my PS3 stopped playing regular DVDs. Won't even recognize them at all. However, when I put a game in, or a BR movie, it works just fine. Any ideas for repair?

Its fairly old so I just went and bought another one to replace it. Gotta good deal on it. I was going to just put it on ebay as is. But, I got to thinking I might try to have it fixed and keep it. I don't really have a need for a 3rd PS3, but, I'd almost rather keep it than sell it for a hell of a lot less than I paid for it.

Might throw it in my camper.

Sounds like the DVD laser died ... only way to fix that is to have the it replaced.

How long had it been since you played a DVD on it? I have 3 "fats" but two of them haven't had a DVD in them for years, if ever really, but I'm gunna try them and see how they are working. Like the poster above me said (laser) that's a crappy frickin problem too. Was it used for DVD's often?

I haven't tried it for a few weeks.. And I bought the other one because I figured its just going bad. DVDs were used mostly on this one, since it was the one I had in my bedroom. Wonder if I can get it replaced for cheap.

I figure I should watch my Blu Rays on the bigger TV with the surround. I did the media extender, and DVDs / DVDRs upstairs since my set up isn't as nice and no need for the extra quality.

Should be similar to this thread although it talks about replacing the blu laser.

Another option is to send it to Sony but they'll probably charge ~$150.

Anyone know off hand if there is only 1 laser in the PS3?? Or maybe only 1 component needed?

Just curious if there is a seperate laser for BR and DVD.

Did a quick search and the original PS3s apparently had a single integrated laser whereas the later models have two lenses.

For earlier models you'd need the KES-400A and later models the KES-410ACA (slim models use the KES-450AAA). Compatibility charts can be found here (links to the 400A but you can also find the 410ACA on that same site):
