Default Weird Things You’ve Discovered You Do as a BD Collector That Don’t Make Sense

It’s just recently occurred to me that I do something weird with the alphabetizing of my collection that was never really a conscious decision—I alphabetize boxed sets of directors’ works (like ALFRED HITCHCOCK: The Limited Edition Masterpiece Collection, the STANLEY KUBRICK: Limited Edition Collection, and the STEVEN SPIELBERG: Director’s Collection) by the last name of the director, but I alphabetize movies about a specific character, like James Bond or Indiana Jones, by their first name. That makes no rational sense but, emotionally, it feels right, LOL. Anybody have any weird collecting ticks like this (other than the obvious OCD need for mint condition slipcovers that so many of us suffer from)?

Makes sense to me. Directors are most often referred to by just their last name, while characters are with their full name.

Buy way more than I really need instead of being more sensible and streaming them like non-collectors.

Even worse - I'll buy something on disc and still just watch it on streaming because it's easier than going into the movie room to grab the title in question.

Fair enough. Seemed objectively odd, but maybe not. Now I find myself debating about whether to put THE DA VINCI CODE, ANGELS & DEMONS and INFERNO in the ‘R’ section for ‘Robert Langdon’, as well as clustering the entire massive Avengers universe under ‘M’ for ‘Marvel’ (or, wait, should it be ‘A’ for ‘Avengers’?!). This is what they mean when they say the things you own end up owning you, isn’t it?

Those questions are why I never do alphabetical. I just cluster by director and then what I feel goes together. It’s a more convoluted way, but it doesn’t keep me up at night.

I'll one up and say I've watched movies on standard over the air cable/premium channel tv that I still own sealed on blu. For some reason I've always enjoyed watching stuff "live" as it airs in the programming block since that's what I grew up doing. There were a lot of times I'd see the movie several minutes in and then have to catch it aired again to see the rest. I've always had somewhat of a tough time getting around to watching movies I own as part of a collection perhaps because there's less of an urgency and coming across stuff on tv kind of has a sense of spontaneity that can be enjoyable.

I used to organize my collection alphabetically, but I decided to reorganize some time ago, and now have them grouped first by label, then alphabetically. It's kind of silly, but I like the visual uniformity of the spines on display. It looks more cohesive and less chaotic.

One odd thing I will sometimes do (and I'm sure it's not that odd among collectors, but for most people it would be) is, if I am a really big fan of a title, I will buy a second copy to keep sealed as a collector's item. This way I can retain a pristine copy of it while still having a "viewing" copy.

A major pet peeve of mine is when Blu-ray artwork gets those annoying creases along the spines, which I often find happens with Blu-rays I order online. I think this occurs from them getting weight applied to them, and the pressure results in creases along the spine of the artwork. Sometimes the creases will encroach onto the front and back of the cover. To the average person, it's probably not even noticeable, but to me it looks hideous and drives me nuts. I've been known to immediately replace titles when I receive them like this—I will sell the one with the creased spine, and replace it with a cleaner copy. I have a few rare, out-of-print titles with this issue, but I've more or less accepted it with those ones, simply because they're more difficult to replace. If the spine is black, you can touch it up with a black marker and flatten it out a bit by putting it in a closed book, but it rarely ever looks perfect.

As you can imagine, I also loathe dents/punctures to the front or back artwork. I try to doctor those as well, but I've found those are even harder to fix.

Ditto. I was short of breath just reading it. That’s one of my biggest reason I despise a world where physical media in brick-and-mortar stores is dying.

Whenever I return a disc to its case I always make sure the title is right side up, even though it will invariably spin around due to how most discs rotate freely around the hub.

I don't know that I've seen creases in spines before. I do hate when I get a movie and the plastic from the case itself is all wrinkly. It looks like it got all wet or something. Freaks me out every time. I try and change the case out, but don't always have enough on hand...

Bought a lot of titles for cool cover art only to display just the spine.

Marvel should be separated into either it's own spot not in the alphabetical or just under M's, and then ordered in storyline order or some other preference and not chronologically... (by other I mean for example Captain Marvel takes place in the 90s, but I wouldn't watch it until after the IW beeper scene... and I wouldn't watch Black Widow in the spot it takes place in for the movie timeline due to the credits scene that takes place in the present time)

I put my "A" titles in the A's and "The" title in the T's, because to me they specifically gave it that title so that's what I call it in my head. That's probably the weirdest thing I do.

I also make sure the disc is oriented with the title right side up....

New titles never go into the collection until they are opened and watched. I have a separate shelf for unopened/unwatched titles.

I always assumed this was the default for collector's.

Mine is Alphabetically by Label > Alphabetically by Title. For the non-boutiques, it's alphabetically by genre, then title.

One weird thing I do is that any titles that start with A/An (such as A Nightmare on Elm Street0 are under A, and titles that begin with The (such as The Thing) are under T.

Alphabetical makes no sense to me, because then I'd have every James Bond movie scattered to the four winds.
