Default Interesting Emotional Quandary - JJ's HT

Well, as some of you may or may not know, I'm moving out of my current house in a month. It's been a great run for my HT here, since its inception in September of 2008, almost 3 years. But I'm moving on out and up. Moving in w/ my woman and my younger sister. To a better house which fits everyone's needs.

But to help my landlord out, I listed my current house for lease on the internet. Had families, college kids all come by every now and then. I recently had a family fall in love with it and make a deposit on the spot. Then to my surprise - they wanted to know how much for my ENTIRE HT - down to the rugs, pillows, sofas, posters. I thought about it, then said $15,000. Roughly everything in it ran me around $10-$12k (I've kept a detailed book on each piece I've ever bought, down to the last wire and wall plate).

They said they'd consider it, but the husband and two kids really wanted it, so who knows.

But after they left, I sat down for a moment and thought about it. This HT is about as iconic to Jose as the Mona Lisa to Leonardo. Thousands of people know of it as...mine. I've put countless hours/days of research/labor into making it the incredible unit it is now over the past 3 years. Sure, I'd come off better financially...not to mention the INCREDIBLE HT I could build from the ground up at my new house for $15,000...but I honestly planned to take it all with me. I could buy another 683. Not so much a Kuro or a old-school Dynamo, or the VSX-03. But I could make a projector setup. And more. It's the emotional investment I'm not sure I could deal with. I'm 24. It's been a part of who I am for 3 years. Heck, I havent even bonded with my Camaro as much as I did with my old Galant. Material possessions are big to me, lol.

What do you guys think? Never did I expect this kind of situation to surface. I'm honestly torn between hoping they actually do decide to buy it and hoping they decide not to!

PS. Yes, I came back just to ask for advice. I've been in the car forums too much recently...

That's a tough call. I've seen your set-up and I don't think I would part with it. Although, if it's going to help your sale go through, you may want to consider it. We've been trying to sell our place for a year now and we've have a few lookers, but no takers yet. The market is tough for home sales right now, but you said you were going to lease it instead. That may not be as hard as selling. It's tempting to think of $15,000 to start over and you can build from the ground up, so to speak. I know that if we ever have a "next house", I definately want a dedicated HT. I guess you have to ask yourself which is worth more to you: your current set-up or starting over and designing a HT the way you want it. Good luck in your decision and just go with your heart.

As long as everything could be replaced or upgraded then not selling for over what you have invested is silly.

Was it fun working on your HT?

If yes, then don't you think you'd have fun making yourself a new one?

If no(i.e., it was a pain in my ass, I'm glad it's over), then take everything you can.

I have had a bad experience with leaving one place without my old stuff and into a new home and setting up all over again.

You do have a choice right now, that's if they decide to do it.

It's a hobby. Looking at some people on here, it's designed to be built torn down and rebuilt all over again.

Instead of me going on and on with a bunch of mess for a reason, I say do it!!!

Sell it!!! I love my fresh start.

Hey JJ!

My 2 cents: If I was offered equal to or greater than what I invested in my set-up, I would sell. Since the name of the game in this hobby is - "Alway move-UP", I would look at it as a $15K down-payment on an even better set-up. With the wisdom you have gained in the last 3 years (with the help of many on this forum), I would expect you will not only get more for the buck and plan/build smarter, but also you get to enjoy the process all over again! Not to mention - a whole new set of posts and pics on this forum!!! It's a great problem to have! Good Luck!

this is well said and I agree with it fully.

The only thing that would suck JJ is getting rid of the KURO.....that would be a tough loss, maybe you could sell it minus the tv! haha just a thought

You could always tell the guy you could help him pick out a new tv.

I'm with these guys - your HT is incredible, BUT if you can sell it all for MORE than what you Paid for, as my buddy from Cali' says "Duh, WINNING!"

As for the Kuro, that's a tough call. Drop the price down to $14,000 & keep it

Take the money and your PS3 and walk away.

If there are pieces you just can't part with, then replace them now. It's not a bad call for YOU to take the money and move on to bigger and better things. It's a really bad call for HIM to buy someone elses rig and expect to be able to trouble shoot it down the line.

Just to be sure there are no "I paid you $15,000!!!" problems down the line, you should write up a Rig Manual and a wiring scheme to cover yourself and to be cool.

You know, I began to think about the Kuro, the PS3, etc.

I don't think it's a deciding factor, but $15,000 to start a new is a bonanza. And hey, another theater built by Fox, Inc can't go amiss...well, I'm meeting w/ them again on Sunday. We'll see then...

I would swap out that Kuro for a Panasonic, swap the PS3 for a newer model, keep those, and take the $15k! Go with a 100" or more screen and sweet new D-ILA projector!

I sold my old speakers and regret it, but they could not be replaced and I cannot even find them available used any more.

That said, unless you cannot replace something, take the cash. You may have fond memories of this theater, but it won't be the same when you move it and you can take joy in the knowledge that somebody else is able to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

I must say, I am not big into non-projection theaters, but your set up is very nice and is something to be proud of. When you move into your new place, make a system for the room you are moving into and customize it for that room.

I'm in the 'take the money and run' group

The accountant in me says for the most part everything in that theatre is a depreciating asset... if you have 12-13k into it and someone offered 15k I would take that and run!

I do understand the 'blood sweat and tears' aspect of it, but to be honest I think you are leaving behind the 'blood sweat and tears' part of your theatre when you move out, everything else can be replaced.

I agree with the others, take the money and build a better one, if that's possible. If you do decide to take the money, i recommend recording a farewell video of your home theater so that many years later you can see it again.

Going to HT dealers, auditioning new gear, and spending money is better than sex. If I were you, I would not hesitate and sell everything including the old audio junk in the garage.
