Default I watched all 50 of Disney's animated classics in order

I watched all 50 of Disney's animated classics in the order that the first came out on. I watched them on my Blu-ray player and HDTV. After that I went to the theater in DisneyWorld to see Disney's 51st animated classic.

I should really do that soon but going to wait for more of them to be on Blu-ray before I try. Am seeing Pooh soon and can't wait.

Impressive. I've seen them all of course, including the obscure package films and films from the Disney dark ages, but I've not sat down and watched all the films from the canon in their proper order.

So what are some of your favorites?

I think for me, I'm most partial to Beauty and the Beast, 101 Dalmatians, and the Jungle Book...

I tried that in my 20's - but never made it past Caballeros. The one thing that jumped out at me was the swagger of the first five Golden Age films, like Spielberg after Sugarland Express. These weren't just polished and handsome animated films, they were statements. To use a sports analogy, by the time you get to that closing multiplane shot of the forest in Bambi, you get the feeling Walt and Co. were spiking a football and then pointing to heaven.

The other thing I immediately noticed, which surprised me, was that Gideon in Pinocchio is a bit too similar to Dopey in Snow White in many respects. Watching Snow White and Pinocchio back-to-back surprisingly weakens Pinocchio in some respects, only due to familiarity with certain elements carred over from one to the other.

That's what I was thinking. I'm not a big fan of Disney's animated films, so I absolutely could not do it. I have trouble keeping focused on watching just one. Don't get me wrong, there are a few that I love (Jungle Book, Lady & the Tramp, etc), but I find the majority a real yawn.

Thing is, to me, not -all- of their animated films are classics tbh.

To me again, there is a world of difference between what I would call the "true Classics" like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Bambi, Jungle Book, Fantasia, Beauty & Beast or Lion King, then on to the mediocre ones (imo the large bulk) with Dumbo, Pinocchio, 101 Dalmatians, Lady & Tramp, Black Cauldron, Sword in stone, Robin Hood, Rescuers, Mouse Detective, and down to what is to me poor $$ making attempts crap aka Aristocats, Oliver & co, 3 Caballeros, Fox&Hound, Lilo & Stitch...

It is interesting how different various opinions are on the subject. First off I am much more selective with the term "classic" than the Disney folk are, and there are far fewer than 50 "classic" Disney animated films. It has become marketimg hype when a film released a few months earlier is termed as such. Who knows if it will stand the test of time. "Fanatasia" laid an egg when first released and only grew in stature. Others have sunk to the level of usefulness as fulfilling "electronic babysitting" duty. I would not extend that classicfication to any film less than 10 to 15 years old.

I think "Pinocchio" is the finest example of an animated film ever made in terms of artistic merit. "Dumbo" is probably the second best in this regard. "Beauty and the Beast" is for me one of the weakest of the bunch and "The Lion King" a pale attempt to do a re-make of "Bambi" and "The Jungle Book" fused together. I thought "The Sword in the Stone" was the worst of the lot until "Treasure Planet" was released. I have a much higher opinion of "The Rescuers" than most people and feel it is one of the few since his death that Walt himself would have liked. The other standout I think Walt would have cherished made since his death is in my opinion "Lilo & Stitch" which remains my favorite film of the 21st Century, animated or non-animated.

Finally, someone who fells the same as me in terms of the overrated mess The Lion King.
