Hi, can anyone answer my question please? Would a ps3 still carry on playing blurays if the format became obsolete around the same time/before ps3 is obsolete. For example, in five years time at end of 10 year ps3 cycle would firmware still be provided for people that watch blu on their ps3? There seems to be a lot of bluray players that have problems with certain discs and i fully intend to be still watching my discs in 10 years time. Would there be any obstacles to me doing that on a ps3? Presuming of course that bluray was obsolete. I have a nagging feeling that ps4 will not support bluray. Sorry to waffle, the question of ps3 providing me with at least a decade of bluray watching is important to me. Would appreciate any answers or suggestions, cheers

By 2014-15 the industry may push for everything in the cloud. I fear the way things could be heading. Look at apple and i am sure microsoft will follow.
In a worst case scenario i need to know my blurays will be playable for many years to come, well beyond 2016 when the ps3 lifespan could be over. |

Of course the PS3 will always play Blu Rays.
Are you kidding?... You think they would try to dis-able Blu Ray playback on the most popular Blu Ray player ever sold? Are you kidding? You know PS3 games are distributed on Blu Ray, right? I think the odds of Blu Ray playback being dis-abled on PS3 is right up there with the Popcorn button dis-appearing on your microwave. =Brian Last edited by bhampton; 08-05-2011 at 01:42 PM. |

I am talking about 5 years from now if digital downloads are the distribution system for ps4. So you think a new ps3 bought off ebay for example would still play blurays say 8 or 9 years from now? Assuming blurays were obsolete and i was using it to watch my back catalogue? Would it have the necessary firmware to play all discs, after all firmware updates might not be available for an older playstation when ps4 is yeara into its life cycle.

Seriously....
I don't think anyone can tell you about what's going to be happening 5 or more years from now. There's plenty of Blu Ray players though... You will be able to play blu rays for the rest of our lifetimes... if you want too. -Brian |

That is all i want. to be able to play my considerable collection years from now. I think bluray may only have two or three years left. Sadly everyone seems to be jumping on the streaming bandwagon. Sad, sad future for collectors like me.

I don't think blu-ray is going anywhere in the next 5 years. Streaming is great in theory, except that the quality is terrible, and the Internet providers are starting to throttle back bandwidth, so there won't be any improvement any time soon. Though I admit I am biased, I still don't understand why anyone wants to watch a movie on a 3 inch screen on a phone, or even a bigger screen like an iPad. When I want to watch a movie, I want to experience it, not just see a miniature version with poor video and no real sound, and I am not a videophile or an audiophile. Call me crazy.

I guess people enjoy backgrounds moving when they are not supposed to and dancing squares. Many people are just cheap, no standards. Or worse pirate films and think it is their right to do so. Ironically many pirated bluray rips look way better than streaming hd versions supposedly. Now that is twisted!
I read about people making allowances for starved bitrates and how they can tolerate posterization and compression. WHY? Bluray is pure quality and there is no skimping on bit rates. Great picture, sound and usually decent extras. |
