Default Worst Third Entry in a Franchise?

It's pretty self-explanatory; just name your picks, and your reasons for selecting them. Go!

I gotta go with...Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi.

It is very apparent that no serious thought went into the story or lines of dialogue in this one. In fact, I will now put this lower than any of the prequels, as I now find it impossible watch more than 5 min of it at a time without having to turn the channel.

The Mummy 3 was a complete let down, it was a disgrace compared with the first two, they shouldn't have made it without Rachel Weisz

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines

Since it was the same story as the first two films, it didn't need to exist.

I'd have to say X-Men: The Last Stand solely because the first two were great (IMO) and the third was set up to be great as well (The Dark Phoenix storyline), yet Brett Ratner replaced Bryan Singer. Enough said.

Well, I was definitely disappointed with the absence of Weisz, but Maria Bello did a good job, too. My main complaints about the film were that almost every character except Evelyn just fell flat. All the effects in the world just couldn't save this movie. I've never been a big Jet Li fan to start with, and Brendan Fraser's portrayal just felt like he'd been away from the role for too long. I didn't really care for "The Mummy Returns", either, so the first one is the only title from the series in my Blu collection.

Terminator 3 for me. Just really cheezy and not necessary.

Seriously?! I love the 2nd Mummy film, its by far my favourite of the 3 and I have to disagree about the "almost every character" for the 3rd movie, I think it was every character including Evelyn that fell flat. The story was too far fetched for me, even with how far fetched the whole series is, just bringing in the Yeti's had me sitting there thinking "what the hell am I watching?" and don't get me started on the son, Alex. The actor playing him was terrible, he's supposed to be a british character yet he played the role with an american accent

Well, to be honest, the main things that bugged me about "The Mummy Returns" were all the reincarnation nonsense, and the fact that they dumbed down everyone else in favor of the younger Alex (just like Martin Campbell did with Joaquin in "The Legend of Zorro"). It seems like almost every time Hollywood gives a hero a kid, they have to make that child incredibly smarter and more skilled than everyone else...including his / her parents. That approach ruins a lot of sequels for me.

Well, technically, Alex isn't British. Rick was established in the original film as being American, and Evelyn was half-Egyptian herself, working for the Cairo Museum. We're never told what nationality Evie's father was, only that he was "a very, very famous explorer".

I guess thats true but they live in London, Alex was raised there so shouldn't he speak with a London accent?

Hm, awfully tough choice between "Darkman III" and "Superman III." If I had to pick one, I'd say "Darkman III" is slightly worse.

It depends. In the second film, Rick mentions that Alex spent more time with the Curator then he did at home, so its possible he'd pick up the accent that way. I just treat details like this as oversights, because ultimately, they aren't that relevant to the story at hand. Look at "The Mask of Zorro", for example. Anthony Hopkins is Welsh, but his character was Spanish. By contrast, Antonio Banderas actually is Spanish, but his Zorro was Mexican.

Haven't seen all of them, but I know some of them can't possibly be as bad as Superman III.

I guess, but still, I don't think even Maria Bello could save The Mummy 3, her Evelyn was completely bland and couldn't hold a candle to the Rachel Weisz version.

Well then, I guess we're at somewhat of a crossroads on this issue. Don't get me wrong, I like Weisz as an actress, though I openly admit I haven't seen much of her other work. I think it'd would've been great for her to return in the third film, but she reportedly didn't think much of the script, and passed on it as a result. Maria Bello must've had a challenge in taking the character forward, and recasts are hardly ever pleasant affairs...but I do think she did very well with what she was given. Even though the rest of "Dragon Emperor" pretty much sucks, I liked seeing Bello portray Evelyn as more of a fighter, not just the intellectual, history-obsessed woman we got from Weisz. The sai fights we got in "Returns" were cool, but the rest of that film just felt very "off" to me.

I voted for THE MUMMY as well-- it was such a let down to a very fun series-- while I like Maria Bello, she just didn't cut it in this role, Rachel Weisz was very much missed--

Yea, I would make this my second choice, and agree that it is all just rehash through most of the movie with uninteresting characters including Arnie's role.
