Interesting. Everyone talks about PS3 using Blu-ray and X2 possibly using HD-DVD but this is the first I've read about what Nintendo plans to do with their next game platform. Definitely a blow to Blu-ray but still the combined sales of X-Box and GameCube are much much less than the sales of PS2 so this certainly doesn't do much harm to Blu-ray's odds of success.

The thing is retro-compatibility with the Gamecube games... :?
In France, Gamecube is popular, but not as the X-Box and of course not as the PS2...

So yes, PS3 will rocks !!!! :P

I had never really thought about Nintendo's options but it's hard to argue with that simply logic.

I don't think it's too likely that the Rev will feature a HD-DVD player to be honest. Nintendo has always favoured carts or it's own prpriety systems over the more mainstream cd/dvd for the shear fact that it makes it's content far more difficult to copy.

Also keep in mind that for the PS3 and Xbox 2 the choice of format is a big issue, mainly because they want their consoles to support the format that becomes adopted by Hollywood for pre-recorded movies. Nintendo on the other hand only cares about gaming (I haven't seen any efforts at making their consoles into media centers), so they don't have to pick the right format when it comes to pre-recorded movies.

Yeah, right. I think this may prejudicial to them in the end... If they continue to think in terms of consoles, and only consoles. They will hit a wall in a few years like the one they used to hit with the Nintendo 64... :?

Yup, same here Marwin.

Remark that Panasonic worked with Nintendo for their GameCube system!

How would Nintendo include a HD-DVD player in their next console and keep costs down. Making the assumption that they would want the 'Revolution' to be released at a price point below that of the PS3/XBox 2.

The thing is, Sony will be looking to the PS3 to give a significant boost to the Blu-Ray format that it has spent a considerable amount of money developing. Microsoft have billions in the bank and have shown with the XBox that they are prepared to make big losses on hardware to get a share of the market. I'm sure this will carry on with the XBox 2. Nintendo on the other hand aren't prepared to make heavy losses on hardware as has been seen with the GBA, GC and now DS. That's the difference.

Default X-Box 2 Optical Drive....

As many have speculated, X-Box 2 will not use Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. Games will come on dual-layer DVD-9 discs. While the media is the same as that of the current Xbox, the usable space on each disc is up to 7 GB. The drive is slated to run at 12X.

Just thought you guys might find this interesting...

If I recall, Nintendo is using HD-DVD because it allows them to incorporate backward-compatibility with Gamecube games. Also, think of it from a corporate point of view: it would not make sense for Nintendo to support a Sony-developed technology in their new console when Sony is their chief competitor. I applaud them for adopting one of the formats, unlike Microsoft. For Nintendo that's a pretty big step, if you look at the way they've done things in the past.
