deciding which movies are worth buying and which aren't? This may be a silly question and I'm sure it's been discussed countless times before, but I'm having a really tough time trying to figure out if I want to build a library of all the films I think are great or do I just want to buy my favorites that I know I'll rewatch many times. I'm starting to think that buying everything is a waste of money and space when most of them I'll never watch again. There are a lot of great movies I've seen where I tell myself at the time "I'm going to buy this on Blu-ray" but when I really stop and think about it I'm not sure I'll want to watch them again (or at least not watch them enough to justify buying them). I think I kid myself sometimes that I'll watch everything over again when in reality I won't or there just isn't enough times to do so. I'm leaning towards just buying my absolute favorites that I know I'll always come back to. Anyone else struggle with this?

Can't say that I necessarily "struggle" with it but I do take several factors into play. I don't usually just grab something off the shelf. I might break that rule occasionally but if I'm unsure I'll leave it shrink wrapped for a few days so I can return it.
I'd say blind buys are a virtual no-no for me. As for the stuff I know are favorites.....sometimes I'll wait for some kind of steelbook or other special edition. Some movies I own are "very good imo" and have great packaging but I might not own something I "love" yet because the packaging is still limited to amaray and I'm hoping for a better release. I.e., I think The Aviator is a much better film than The Town but I like The Town enough that I had to grab the Limited Edition Collector's Edition but I don't own The Aviator at all. I could go on a bit more on this subject Lol because if you're budget is tight there are so many variables. |

Yeah this happens too. Like Gia.....I don't recall how much I like that movie but remember thinking "Meh....$5? Why not....". I don't remember NOT liking it so it's not a total bust (no pun intended).

I also look up the reviews on this site to see if the transfer is even worth upgrading from DVD to. There I are some films that I love, but never plan to buy on BD unless the deal is too tough to pass up. Some DVDs upconvert so well it's not worth it, especially with movies that aren't really based around visuals.

In reply to "Why?"
The same old story......you're trading something in for, let's say, $4 and then they're putting it back on the shelf for maybe even $15. It's a lot worse with games than movies. I've banned if for about 2.5 years now. |

For the most part, I buy Blu-rays that I know I'll enjoy watching multiple times for the rest of my life. Ever so often, though, I take a risk on something that looks as though it will be up my alley.
I stay away from the new release shelves on Tuesdays, unless there is something that I enjoyed at the theater and am dead set on purchasing as soon as possible (Skyfall, for example), because I learned from my DVD-collecting days that the chance that I'll end up selling a new release blind buy later on is roughly 100%. I bought a ton of Blu-rays in December, January, and February while I was building my new collection, but I've leveled off pretty well since most of my essential favorites are spoken for already. It's out of character for me to have unwatched movies sitting on my shelf, because, during my DVD days, I usually watched a new purchase on the same day that I purchased it, but I bought a lot of Blu-rays quickly and have been catching up watching them lately. I've got 25 unwatched Blu-rays left to watch, so I am almost caught up. Last edited by The Great Owl; 04-29-2013 at 10:02 PM. |

It depends on your budget. If it is tight, you need to really consider what has good replay potential for you. If your funds are unlimited, then it doesn't really matter. If I'm gonna spend real money (more than $10) for a movie, it has to have realy replay value for me or be something I want to on day watch with my son as he gets older. I willing to take more chances as the price drops. It helps to keep an eye on the deals section of the forum where you can often learn of great bargains on new or used BDs.
