I can't believe I forgot District 9. One of the Ice age movies has the effect as well but I will have to watch them again to be for sure. Land of the Lost is a maybe. It may just be good PQ though.

Argh I want to watch these movies again or a few for the first time but I must wait until my sound system comes in.

However Speed Racer certainly has the effect

I just remembered Lakeview Terrace has an awesome soap opera look to it

Anybody know why some movies have this look more then others? Maybe its the camera they are filmed with?

OK new thing for this thread

Movies in BOLD will be movies that have confirmed by 2 or more people to have the "soap opera effect"

This is to ensure they do indeed have the effect and its not just great PQ.

Now we can add a few movies that we are not 100% sure about but someone else can verify later. I will be adding "Hancock" for example, but I need someone else who has seen it to confirm it has the soap opera look when you have motionflow turned on

Most of the films listed so far were shot in HD rather than film meaning those shot in HD will have this specific look.

Example as I'm watching it right now: Zombieland.

I can confirm Forgetting Sarah Marshall has it.

As a matter of fact, most newer movies will have the effect unless they're animated. I always have to turn it off when I'm at my friend's place.

There are people who actually like that effect? That's completely baffling as it's entirely obnoxious. In fact, I don't understand how the OP can thing it makes them look real? It makes them look super fake. And certainly nothing like a stage play.

I keep my Automotion turned off because I hate that look. Are you guys saying with Blu-rays it actually makes them better?

The soap opera effect you are seeing is not encoded on the disc, it is processing your television does to change the original framerate of the picture by artificially smoothing the motion. Each film will have different results on different TV's. So what may be great on one TV may look like garbage on another. The films you have put in bold are films that have high ratings for picture quality in general.

Probably not as most are shot on video, not film.

Is there anyway to know which movies were shot on film and which were shot in HD with relative ease? If there was a way to know then it would really be down to just PQ as to which of those have the effect the best

Created new "thumbs up thumbs down system" to give an exact number of those who disagree or agree with a certain film having the effect

I remember "The Blind Side" having the effect in some scenes but it wasn't as pronounced as other movies

When I first saw the effect at a demo HDTV at Best Buy I knew I had to get a TV that was capable of producing images like that. I settled on the entry level Bravia 46VKDL5100 with its motion flow. It has changed the movie experience forever with me, so much so that even though I never use buy movies, I maybe bought 10 DVDs my entire life but I now I have nearly 30 bluray discs.

Im not sure how you say it makes them look fake, it makes movies look like 'home video' which touches home with me better then super glossed over in another world, untouchable piece of art look of your average movie.

In fact, everyone in my family loves the effect there is only one who thinks it makes the movies look like cheap home video. Whatever TV I upgrade to in the next year or two will have to have some sort of 'motionflow' technology

Thanks for the thread. This will inform me as to which movies NOT to buy on BD. I have no idea why you would want a film to look like video. Having a movie image look like a soap opera (IMO) destroys the suspension of disbelief that must be accomplished to enjoy a movie, especially movies that don't take place within our current reality.

It's like looking at "Making of..." footage. When the actors go through the motions in those documentaries, it never looks believable. But when you see it in the final film, it is.

Movies are not supposed to look like soap operas or video games. The fact that many people have grown up with TV and videogames and not film doesn't change that fact.

Intertesting thread, If there is such an effect, I'm glad it's not enabled on my set and I'm glad I have no idea what it is.

Most of my Blu Rays look great.

I believe that Bluearth started this thread for people who like the "soap opera" effect that is produced by the motion-flow/auto-motion plus feature available on most LCD HDTvs. Blu-ray movies and players do not have this feature or "look"; its inherent to the technology of 120/240Hz refresh rate tvs. This thread is like the "lovers of grain only" thread; if you don't like it then just move along without starting arguments and insulting those who do like the soap opera effect. As for the intended look of movies, the consumer will always have the final word as to how their HDTvs will be utilized even if the tv set is left on vivid or dynamic right out of the box - free will.
