A stunning piece of work that is not only beautiful to look at, but further enhances our collective knowledge of the film: https://performance-book.com |

I've not seen or even yet own all of them, but these are the releases I'm most happy studios and boutiques have put out. Ingmar Bergman's Cinema a clear winner for the year. An incredible package, beautifully put together that I can't wait to explore in 2019.

I feel like this should be one of the most popular year-end topics, yet every year I struggle to even find a thread like this; I'm far more interested in what the community's top blu-ray releases of the year are, than what their top theatrical releases are. Why is this thread only at one page? Cause it's hidden in the UK subforum? Anyways, here are my top 10 releases of the year (for now):
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The three newest films on this list - A Taxi Driver, Mandy, and The Shape of Water, all have more elaborately-packaged editions in other regions, which I've been tempted by at different times over the last year, but I've stuck to the standard editions. Unremarkable releases aside, these are some of my favourite films of the last two years and deserve inclusion for that reason. Wild at Heart is a movie I keep rewatching, and liking more every time I see it. When I bought the French release last year, I just wanted to rewatch it, and I didn't think I liked the movie enough to care if the version I had was region B-locked and had some French text or whatever. Now I've watched the movie twice since then (including a couple hours ago), and I think it might be one of my favourite movies now, so I'm quite happy to have, for my money, a much more definitive edition of the film. An honourable mention also to another "Shout Select" Nic Cage Collector's Edition: Valley Girl is another pretty awesome release. The Great Silence is one of my favourite movies since I watched it a few years back (in really low quality), so this is definitely one of the biggest releases of the year for me – haven't got around to watching it yet, but I will soon! I got on a real John Waters kick last year, and Female Trouble, now watching it again on Criterion blu-ray (loaded with great extras), is goddamn hilarious, definitely one of his best. I'm so glad Criterion is releasing these stupid movies, and I can't wait for Polyester this year (with scratch and sniff cards included I trust). However, my favourite Criterion release of the year is definitely Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters - an absolutely stunning release of one of the most audio-visually stunning movies ever made. Ichi the Killer is another movie, like the Dead or Alive Trilogy last year, that I'd watched in super-low quality years ago and thought was okay, but decided to revisit thanks to the new blu-ray, and to my surprise ended up totally loving on my second viewing. These are films I feel I could revisit again and again, and I'm so glad this era of Miike's work is getting some decent treatment on blu. But my absolute favourite releases of the year are Third Window's simultaneously announced Sion Sono releases: The Whispering Star and Antiporno. With any new Sion Sono release, it's up in the air whether any kind of English-friendly release will exist whatsoever – this is my favourite filmmaker, and I'm always wondering how and if I can actually see his new stuff. Third Window previously said The Whispering Star was way too risky for them (being Sono's least marketable film in decades), and I figured Antiporno was out of their price range as well – I figured Whispering Star, and by extension the associated feature documentary The Sion Sono, was a lost cause, and Antiporno, unless maybe Eureka picks it up, nobody would. Then Third Window announced all of this at once, and made my damn year with these fantastic releases. |

1. Ingmar Bergman's Cinema
How could it not be? One of the most comprehensive home video releases ever, dedicated to the work of one of my favourite directors. It seems churlish to have any criticism of it, only that it is so comprehensive that the exclusions seem even more bizarre. Berlin Alexanderplatz Second Sight have had a great year and this is the highlight - a great presentation, at the correct frame rate with some terrific extras. Bring on World on a Wire. Jean-Luc Godard + Jean-Pierre Gorin: Five Films My favourite Arrow Academy release of the year. Here's hoping that Arrow continue to release Godard's less traditionally celebrated works. Early Hou Hsiao-Hsien I've been asking/begging for HHH releases for years now, so this was a very welcome follow up to MoC's release of Daughter of the Nile last year. Undoubtedly an essential release, with the only negative being that, well, two out of the three films are not very good. Fingers crossed that local releases of the likes of A Time to Live, A Time to Die, Dust in the Wind, and Millennium Mambo will happen. Cold Water An Olivier Assayas film that I've wanted to see for years, and it didn't disappoint. A fantastic release from Criterion too, who really had a banner year and re-asserted their place on top of the boutique label food chain with Bergman, this, Dietrich / Von Sternberg, The Magnificent Ambersons, The Age of Innocence, The Tree of Life, Andrei Rublev, and A Matter of Life and Death. |
