USA Nightmare Castle, Castle of Blood, Terror-Creatures from the Grave (Severin)

Quote:
As we first revealed here, Severin Films is giving Steele’s 1965 chiller NIGHTMARE CASTLE (a.k.a. THE FACELESS MONSTER among other titles) its hi-def disc debut August 18. The actress takes a dual role in Mario Caiano’s film, which features the equally legendary composer Ennio Morricone’s first horror score: Steele plays a woman who, along with her lover, is tortured to death by her sadistic husband and then returns from the grave, and her unstable stepsister. Restored in hi-def from the original negative, NIGHTMARE CASTLE will be accompanied on the Blu-ray by two more Steele flicks, both presented in 2K scans of rare U.S. 35mm release prints: CASTLE OF BLOOD and TERROR CREATURES FROM THE GRAVE. Other special features are:

• Exclusive new audio commentary by Steele and horror historian David Del Valle
• “Barbara Steele in Conversation” featurette
• Interview featurette with director Caiano
• TERROR CREATURES featurette with director Massimo Pupillo, actor Riccardo Garrone and film historian Fabio Melelli (in Italian with optional English subtitles)
• TERROR CREATURES deleted scenes (in French with optional English subtitles)
• Trailers
[Show spoiler]
Quote:
Beyond that, Gregory reveals to Fango that Severin will bring the Italo-classic Barbara Steele-starrer NIGHTMARE CASTLE to Blu-ray. “We’re hopefully doing a commentary with Barbara next week,” he says, “and we’re also going to include the American cuts of CASTLE OF BLOOD and TERROR CREATURES FROM THE GRAVE in HD. We’ve transferred them from good prints

SWEET, I've had the DVD of nightmare castle on my amazon wishlist for a while, I'm glad I never got around to buying it. So this is going to be a triple feature on one disc?!

I'll be interested to see if Castle of Blood is an upgrade from the Synapse DVD. I know with these old Italian flicks it's not always a sure thing that they can get a halfway decent master, and Synapse had to do a lot of scrounging to put theirs together. I wonder if they're not doing a stand-alone since it doesn't look very good.

I don't actually know the third movie, but I'll definitely be glad to see it as it's another vintage horror with Barbara Steele!

Now let's hope it's a success so they can pursue getting that amazing source used on the R2 "Horrible Dr Hitchcock" too

Nightmare Castle has always been my favorite Italian black and white horror movie, I'd put it up there with Mario Bava's best.

I remember going through a very rough time in my life when I discovered it. I bought one of those cheap DVD sets at Best Buy than had like 20 public domain titles for $10 and that being the only movie of all those that was really any good.

I never found a decent DVD of the full length movie until many years later. Glad to see it get the treatment it deserves on Blu-ray. I'll definitely pick this one up, I feel a lot of personal attachment to it.

Argh, I hadn't even thought about that. It better not be! Although the three Friedel films are all on one disc, so I'm guessing this one will be too.

Edit: I sent them an email.

Castle of Blood from Synapse is a great DVD release, and its an international version with the uncut scenes which arent English dubbed. Severins release will not have those scenes.. its a pure US cut, as is Terror Creatures..

It doesn't really bug me in this case, if they're only getting the US version of Nightmare Castle I wouldn't have wanted to buy it by itself but as part of a triple feature I'll certainly take it. I guess we'll just have to hope there are no special features so the transfers don't get too compressed.

At four hours and eighteen minutes for the three films alone, there better not be! From the wording of the email, I think Castle and Terror-Creatures will be/function as the bonus features.

You know, whether it's going to be a box set or something like that, because after researching a little bit about the movies themselves, it would appear that Castle of Blood is a superior film to NC (?), and yet it will likely be included merely as some sort of an extra, as you already pointed out. Weird. At least, it will be in HD.

There are European dvds of CASTLE OF BLOOD that blow Synapse's release away. Crisper, more modern scan, better blacks, white, & grays, etc. It'd be nice to see it brought here in hd, but since Synapse's dvd was ripped off and didn't sell well, chances are it won't happen.

At the same time, the U.S. version actually contains different footage than the Italian version with one of the bigger differences being changing how someone dies. I wish someone would release the director-approved Italian version with subtitles in the U.S. also.

Also it'll be great to have Barbara Steele's commentary!! I guess just on Nightmare Castle?

In the last month, Severin and Criterion have announced titles that I suggested to them 2-3 years ago. (not that I take credit )

Anyway, great news all around. Kudos to Severin!
Youre not the only one who suggested those titles to Severin - I asked them about those Gothic titles and Caltiki YEARS ago
Now Id love Virgin of Nuremberg and the Embalmer also !
